Hi
I will shortly receive my HP Envy 14, it comes with 4GB of RAM but if i would like to install some extra DDR3 memory, what frequency should i be looking for?.

the envy 14 supports 1066mhz and 1333 mhz.
it comes with 1333mhz from stock (but runs it at 1066mhz if you have an i5)
the ram only runs at 1333mhz when you have the i7 in it. -
thank you!
-
So even the dual core options come with 1333mhz rated sticks? THat's good to know. My Quad came with a 1333 and I bought another to upgrade to 8gb, but I heard that i3 and i5 models only came with those rated for 1066!
-

they're rated at 1333.
they can't run at 1333 though, they run at 1066 because the i5 won't let them run at 1333 -
thanks... very informative!
-
I know this is an old post, but is there a way to OC the ram to get it to run at 1333 ?
Ive been looking for a BIOS mod with no luck -

No, there is no way for the moment to overclock the i5's FSB with any program. (SetFSB isn't compatible with the PLL's used in the Envy 14's). Also, the i5's are only maxed at 1066 in design. There is really nothing you can do and even if you OC'ed the RAM, the i5 won't still be able to use it. -
damn.... thanks for the quick reply

This is the exact same 4GB OEM stick that comes factory in the Envy 14. I bought mine from here to match the single 4GB that came with my laptop and have been extremely pleased.

I have the exact same, just bought one using coupon code KICKOFF (15% off)

wow, I got the good surprise of receiving the stick today!!!
It came from san jose, which is a 60 mins drive from where I live. They must have shipped as soon as they got the order.
The chip took 2 mins to install and worked like a charm.
Now I can dual channel with 2 exact same memory sticks. -
it says out of stock now..i just bought this stick from a guy on nbr for $50..couldve saved $10..oh well

This issue has long confused me. My HP Elitebook 2740p came with 1333 mhz ram even though only Core i5 cpus were available. Is there any reason they would do this? Turns out ram is so cheap and 1333 is about the same price as 1066 (just got 4 GB sticks for $34 ea.), so no big issue. Just wondered why they would spec a bus. notebook erroneously. Any thoughts? -

Well, for corporate, if your company has a HP-approved repair team, they often are allowed to upgrade Probooks/Elitebooks with new CPU's if requested by the company. Therefore an i5 Elitebook for instance can be later on upgraded to an i7. If any company that does that, they might as well supply the 1333 RAM ahead of time so the company doesn't have to spend again on new RAM to take full advantage of the i7 upgrade. That's the reason.
I don't know when the Envy line got the same treatment of having i5's use 1333 RAM. The Envy 15 and Envy 13 era were given 1066 for i5's, 1333 for i7's as that made a lot of sense. -

Just curious, how exactly would I check if the ram I bought & installed is running dual channel?
-
Star Forge Quaggan's Creed Redux!
The only way you can run dual channel on RAM is if you installed two RAM Modules if the identical capacity and frequency. -
so all that latency and time stuff doesnt matter? You ony need to match capacity and frequency? Why do people always say its better to match brands also?
-
Star Forge Quaggan's Creed Redux!
Well most frequencies comes with same timings. In other words. All 1066 RAM Modules has a 7 CAS Latency, while all 1333 RAM Modules comes with a 9 CAS Latency. (Assuming those modules are just stock profiled and not tweaked). So latency in a sense is fixed with the frequency.
Most people like to match brands as an assurance. Some brand makers tend to have differently circuitry layouts that occasionally will not like to work with another brand module. Having same brands will guarantee that they will work dual channel. -

Thanks. Is there any downside to using 1333mhz dual channel ram (8GB in my case) on a computer such as an HP Elitebook 2740p vs. 1066mhz ram? For that matter, is there like to be any noticeable difference if instead of using 1333mhz RAM in my HP DV8 Core i7-720 I used 1066mhz ram?
Thanks. -

There is no downsides of using 1333 RAM in your Elitebook with the i5 as the 1333 Modules will automatically downclock to 1066 with the CAS timing of 7 when it detects the i5.
There is a downside if you do vice-versa by putting in 1066 RAM with a i7-720QM. The i7-720QM can operate natively with 1333. By putting in 1066, your are actually crippling its maximum potential.
Here is the rule of thumb:
Core-i3, Core-i5 4xx/5xx and Core-i7 6xx (Mobiles): Maximum RAM Frequency is 1066 but they will POST with 1333 (1333 will self downclock to 1066).
Core-i7 7xx/8xx/9xx (Mobiles): Maximum RAM Frequency is 1333 but they will POST with 1066. HOWEVER, the CPU will DOWNCLOCK to 1066 if it is paired with 1066 Modules. So essentially you are downclocking the CPU's BUS throughput. -
Just received my Envy 14, interestingly the single 4GB stick is by Micron, not Samsung (part no: mt16jsf51264hz-1g4d1). It's still 10600 CL9, but retail for another looks to be approaching $400!!
Any recommendations for either a specific well-matched brand (4GB) or perhaps replace it with 2x4GB?
(first post - woot!) -
isnt samsung a rebranded micron?
-
Star Forge Quaggan's Creed Redux!
Crucial, Samsung and Micron generally share the same production vendor. However, I have had a Micron module that didn't use Samsung chips. Hmmmm... -
So, which sticks are ppl generally putting in their Envy 14?

I used http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820231341&nm_mc=TEMC-RMA-Approvel&cm_mmc=TEMC-RMA-Approvel-_-Content-_-text-_-
Works fine, and is running dual channel. -
Gets fantastic reviews on NewEgg - thanks! I'll wait to see if there's any other recommendations but seems like a good buy. Do you know what brand your original stick is?
-
Star Forge Quaggan's Creed Redux!
Most HP Stocks comes with Micron or Samsung. However, G. Skill uses the same vendor pool as Micron and Samsung, so it will be compatible. -
Are you running 1 x OEM 4GB + 1 x G Skill or 2 x G Skills?
-
G.Skill memory added, everything appears to work fine. No crashes / BSODs so didn't see a need to run memtest, and Windows memory score increased from 5.9 to 6.9.
An SSD drive would make a much bigger difference, but $40 for a 4gb->8gb upgrade isn't bad. -
How can I tell which maker of ram my computer came with, I opened it up and wrote down the numbers on it but google searches aren't bringing up anything.
And to be clear, this is 204 pin ram right? There's an erroneous new egg product that lists 240 pin ram as Envy 14 compatible... -
Star Forge Quaggan's Creed Redux!
Yes, all laptop DDR3 RAM is 204-pinned. Also use CPU-Z or HWiNFO32 to check the make of your RAM sticks. HP should be using Micron, Samsung or Hynix.
What RAM frequency does Envy 14 support?
