I just ordered an Envy 17 (new gen) from HP yesterday, and upgraded to the 1TB HDD. I have the intent of sticking in a SSD as a boot drive. The Envy has room for my two drive setup, right? And I can upgrade it myself?
The SSD I'm looking for is only for a boot drive, so somewhere between 40GB and 80GB. Is this a good choice that's compatible with the Envy?

Based on what I've seen on this website and online the crucial m4 is probably the most popular ssd out there. Because of its price and performance ratio. You really can't wrong with.
However keep in mind that it is one of the earlier ones to come out so in terms of age its not of the most recent ones to come to market.
Also checkout the deals subforums. There are several good deals to be found on ssds every so often..... -
One question I have is if you just ordered this from HP why didn't you get the one with the 256 GB SSD factory installed. Personally the 128 GB SSD was way to small. I myself just recently upgraded my HP 17 3d with 1 + 1 TB HDD to a 300 GB Intel 320 series. I would of went up to 500 GB but it was way to expensive. I picked up the 300 GB SSD on ebay for $ 350.00

Much agreed about the Crucial M4. You can get the 256GB version for just $339 at Newegg, right now. Other choice would be the Samsung 830 model 256 GB drive. Either one will suite you well. Crucial is a bit cheaper, and is rock solid performancewise. My 2nd Gen Envy shipped from HP with an Intel 320 series 300 GB SSD. Right now, I am still using as my OS drive in combination with a 750 GB HDD...and my machine is solid and flies. A worthwhile investment....Whether you go Crucial or Samsung...make sure to update the firmware for best stability and performance...

I went with Corsair GE Force 3....haven't had any issues with it so far.
