Are they really just going to stick with the Brightview or is there something in the works?

It's hard to imagine an Envy lineup that doesn't have a Radiance quality screen.

Like you said, as the Radiance is obviously a selling point, I'm guessing that there will be some other high-end display by the end of the year.

I am pretty sure they will source something similar to that. On a side note, I wish all their laptops had an option for higher res / quality screen.

This small release may have been a trial to gauge the potential success.

If after what has happened in the last week, they don't get a high res screen, they need to change to a non profit organization because they aren't looking to make money. That being said, it's very possible they won't.

They would have to be totally retarded to ignore the fact people are willing to pay more for a nicer display. If there's money to make, they'll get on it. Capitalism & profit are corporations's gods.

To answer this question, I would reference you to THIS post and THIS post here at NBR for more insight on HP's problems with their Radiance displays.

And if HP actually has zero plans to find a replacement for the radiance display of similar quality then I think people ought to look elsewhere. I can't imagine they would not want to find a replacement, but if they have no intention of doing so... that is complete garbage.

I suppose the reason why it is hard to find a replacement is the odd screen size/resolution. It may be that no other panel manufacturers are producing a 14.5 screen with that res, and it may cost too much for the volume HP is ordering to bother with.

Apple gets higher res panels all the time but maybe they get special treatment as they sell a large number of higher end / res panels due to the mac flock buying so many macs no matter the cost. I'd imagine if apple had a panel contract they may have forced production of that panel if for no other reason than to not lose the higher res panel business for the more common 15" models. But who knows.

The odds of HP releasing an HP Envy with a Radiance screen this year is none. Their only manufacturer of Radiance screens abruptly stopped making them, leaving HP with hundreds of orders to cancel. There is no Plan B for HP, because from what I was told, that manufacturer was essentially the only company that could/would make them for HP.

It's the lack of Radiance that is making me look at a MacBook again.

There won't be one. HP blundered by going to this 14.5" size alone. Either the envy 14 will continue with the BV display or it will be replaced with a new envy 15.

A new 15 with a radiance like screen would be good, I wonder though how many people they would lose by not having a smaller form factor notebook?

Or do like the Sony Z and cram the same hardware and quality in a 13.3".

Being a standard size it should not be too hard to source.

There's hardly any difference in size between the two. The 15.6" is actually thinner than the 14.5", and what's an extra inch diagonally?

Besides, with the 15.6" display, you can go full 1080p. I'm hoping they resurrect the Envy 15 so I can get one :D

If they whip up an Envy 15 with:
    SB i5/i7
    1920x1080 screen
    Upgraded graphics
    USB 3.0
    Series 3.0 ClickPad
    Blu-ray drive

... all will be forgiven, HP.

i think they would be crazy not find either someone with a radiance screen or ditch the 14 and make 15 the default smaller size.

Many people, including me, consider anything 15 and over to be too big to carry around.

14.5" was the biggest I could go for, a laptop is supposed to be portable.
I have an i7 desktop at home to do heavy work and gaming that kills any $2000+ laptops out there.

Alternatively, they could go to the 14.1" form factor and get 1600x900 panels. Although I'm unsure how they could pack more power in that form factor than the DM4 already has.

on a side not the dm4 can come with a dual core i7. An option the envy 14 shouldve had.

That's the problem with smaller form factors than the 14.5. Go smaller and you have less space for added fans and more powerful graphics below a certain pricepoint.

Sony did it but with a much higher base price.

I wouldnt mind paying a premium for an envy 13 with specs like the envy14 / vaio Z.
