If I use CPUID to check temperature on my HP, under ACPI there are temps for:
GFXZ
DTSZ
CPUZ
SKNZ
BATZ
FDTZ
i can guess some, but what I'm most interested in is FDTN. It is normally 0C even when the core rises. But once the core hits the threshold to turn on the fan, FDTZ immediately shows 50C. As soon as the fan shuts off with core temp below the threshold (approx 44C), FDTZ almost instantly becomes 0C again.
Very strange. FDZN is usually zero and only jumps to 50C when the fan runs. It stays at 50C even as the core temps gradually decrease. When the fan stops, it's rapidly back to zero.

anyone? These are from the 6830s business model

FDTZ is your fan speed not temperature, so i believe its 50%
GFXZ = graphics card
DTSZ = digital thermal sensor
CPUZ = cpu temp
TZ = chipset thermal zones
something something.. use a different program like coretemp/gpu-z/speedfan. -

Hello.I have question.
I have HP Compaq 6730s (the same as 6830s but with 15 inches display).
I use the same program but I have very stange problem...
FDTZ is constact 50 degree (with the correction must be 50 % fan speed) - so my fan is always on 50 % even when the temperatures (all) are under 40 degree!
Sometimes It is quiet - on 20 %, but very often it freeze on 50 % all the time - SADLY!
After I perform "Stand By" the speed is 20 % and the fan is quit, but only after "Stand By" and in some lucky times (without specific reason)!
Where is the problem?
Hardware problem (with some thermal sensor) or Software problem?
I pre-installed original Windows XP 5!!! Times + 1 time Vista (from recovery console F11 - full clear install) and the situation is the same every time!
By the way I'm with very strange BIOS version F.05 (still unavalible on HP official website (they have F.04) , but F.05 strangely exist on my notebook!
jh2: please can you check and tell (to) me your BIOS version (the bios for 6730s and 6830s is the same too)?!
My notebook is on under one month (I got it on 06 octomber 2008) -
i think it is associated with ich9 on cpu which has intel thermal technologies and bus tech to save power and switching between them

Hm very interesting answer!
I'm not very familiar with ICH9!
I just know I must install Windows XP in SATA IDE mode, and after to switch to ICH9 (AHCI MODE)!
I noticed someting interesting.It is impossible to be 100 % sure but...
I first had Intel(R) ICH9M-E/M SATA AHCI Controller Version: 8.0.0.1039 (date 15.4.2008)
After I downloaded and installed new driver from Intel(r)'s website.
Version: 8.6.0.1007(data 12.9.2008)
I noticed my fan was better (not always on 50 % and noise) 2 days in a row (It is impossible to be 100 % sure, because other themperatures CPU,GPU...) but...
Only problem was hot left pad surface (where must be HDD or CPU, I guess HDD)....
So I switched back to old version and now the problem is fully here again.
The fan is stuck to 50 % non stop!
Do you think It is just software problem?
Because I'm afraid for my hardware!
What are these ACPI temperature zones?
