i have a dv9205us vista laptop, my laptop did some kinda auto softwear update, and not my hibernate mode is gone, i only have sleep and shut down mode. i went into control pannel and power options to see if i could set it back, but again the only options i have is shut down and sleep mode.

Happened to me also when I cleaned my drive and checked clean hibernate files. Sleep mode is the best way to shut down anyway unless you are taking out the battery, doing a hardware upgrade, or your laptop is going to be off for many days away from power.

Check to make sure there are no hardware conflicts in device manager.

There should be (not sure about vista) - functions like "if I close the lid - do this"; "if I push the pwr button - do that"

I understand. Just try pressing F1, or something like just****inggoogling it entering your laptop model, OS and your problem
