Hi. Last night, I had my laptop on for only a couple hours downloading some files and it got so hot that it almost burned me when i went to pick it up. I held my hand near the vents and felt no circulation at all. When I restarted the computer, I noticed that I could no longer hear the fan during the POST.

Normally when I turn on the computer there is a short and very noticible *woosh* which sounds like the fan. This is no longer the case. It didn't do it today either and in the short time I've had it on tonight it already seems to be getting hotter than normal.

Is there any type of software that can test the fan and see if the laptop is cooling properly? Or should I just call HP about this? Please help as this is the second laptop that they have sent me and I don't want to go through another ordeal if I don't have to.

    Thanks.

    thanks.

Damn...I haven't even had this thing for 2 weeks.

I'm turning off my laptop now and will continue this on my desktop...do you think it's possible that something on my laptop has already been damaged? I installed a tempurature monitor which showed my core temp at 69C.

Did you get it with a coupon? If not then you should have a easy choice-- just return it. Problems like this on a 2 weeks old laptop isn't a good sign.

Which program did you use to measure your temp, and more importantly what are you running when you measured it? I'm using HWMonitor and it shows my core at 39C and 40C running OneNote and firefox.

I was running SpeedFan as the monitor because I wanted to measure my fan speed, but it didn't even register a fan. The Core 0 and Core 1 Temps were not very hot at all, but there was also a "Core" temperature which I believe is the overall temp that listed as 69 celcius. This was tonight after running it for a few minutes.

However, last night after running it for a couple of hours (which is when I noticed the overheating) I didn't have a monitor. I noticed because it burned my fricken hand when I went to pick it up.

This is the second laptop that HP has sent me. The first one had a defective screen. This time I will be asking for a full refund and will most likely be going with another manufacturer.

Try another temperature monitor and see if the temperatures get any different. I'm saying that because I used to have speedfan, which gave me very different (and wrong) temperatures compared to HWMonitor.

Try uninstalling speedfan just incase it somehow did something to the fan. Update your BIOS too

No i dont think your laptop has been damaged severly. As a fail-safe feature, the laptop shuts off automatically if it gets too hot.

Use HWMonitor to keep a good eye on temps.

Return it if nothing else works. you have limited return time keep that i mind

Thanks. I did not have SpeedFan on my system before the overheating problem. I installed it to see if it would tell me anything about my fan. And then promptly uninstalled it. I will try HWMonitor to keep an eye on the temps, but the BIOS is updated and I'm still worried since the the computer was running unattended for over 2 hours before I touched it and realized that it was overheating.

I'm afraid that this prolonged use without a fan may have caused unnoticable damage that might cause further problems in the future which is one of the reasons I don't want to simply have HP fix the fan issue. The fact that this is the second laptop they've sent me with problems also makes me very wary of continuing my efforts with HP.

You said the laptop shuts off automatically if it gets to hot. If it was overheating enough to basically burn my hand when I touched it, do you think maybe this fail-safe feature failed?

I suggest returning the laptop if its giving you too much troubles.

Have a look at the Asus line, my friend bought one and quite happy with it. They also come with 2 year standard warranty w/ accidental protection (some countries)

Here is a screenshot of HWMonitor after about five minutes of runtime. There appears to be no fan sensor. These temps are with it being absolutely nowhere near as hot to the touch as it was last night. Please let me know if these readings seem too hot.

Thanks for the heads up about the ASUS. My only regret about returning this is that it is a 400 US dollar upgrade from the original laptop that was defective. But maybe it's time to go with another manufacturer if they continue to send defective products.

*I notice this is on the second page, so please read the previous post...thanks*

P.S. I'd like to just get an Acer, but for some reason there's not much in the way of support as far as getting XP installed. If I thought it was difficult to get the drivers for HP (without knowing about this wonderful forum first :)) then I can't imagine the time I'll spend on an Acer.

Cores and GPU seem to be running warmer than usual. Keep an eye on the fan exhaust. CPU should be around 40 and GPU around 55 after you leave it idle for about 5mins

Do the temps shoot up when you play a game?

Havent tried running a game...don't have any yet. Isn't the GPU supposed to have it's own fan that keeps it cool? Or is that only with desktop GPU's? Is the one cooling fan the only fan on a notebook the only one?

Also, there is no fan exhaust at all. I can feel absolutely no circulation when I hold my hand near or right up next to the vents.

CPU and GPU share the same fans for notebooks..

Fan could be dead or not functioning properly. Contact HP, see what they can do

I suggest getting a replacement as it can be counted as a DOA (dead on arrival) if your still on the return/refund time period.

Unfortunately, this laptop IS the replacement. I asked for another one, but HP told me that my only option at this point is to send it in to their bench techs and have them take a look at it and then if it's still causing problems, we can "look at other options". So that's where I'm at right now. Hopefully I won't have any more issues once it gets back to me.

    P.S. I have a dv9700t

Refund it while you still can. Once this period is over, its straight to HP warranty. It could be a nightmare with HP repairs for you

Refund it then buy a NEW properly working one somewhere else if you still like the dv9700

I got it back and the fan seems to be working now but it's still running hot IMO. I asked for a refund before i sent it in for repair and HP refused. They said a refund is only an option AFTER the benchtechs take a look at it. I went through the same process with the first laptop.
