I love the zt3000, but it was too expensive in November when I was shopping (I wanted at least 1.7 Ghz. Pentium M), so I decided to wait. A friend told me that I should definitely get the Pentium M, as I like to curl up on the couch with my laptop. Now the zt3000 is no longer offered at hp.com. That being said, I’m hoping someone will offer advice on the following…
    1. Do I really want the Pentium M, since I will often use the notebook on my lap?
    2. What are the pros and cons of purchasing from dealers other than offical HP?
    3. If I decide I want the Pentium M and purchasing from a non-HP dealer is no big thing, then why not purchase the zd series given my desired weight range is 6.5-7.5 lbs.?

I would like a wide-screen notebook 15-17”screen/ 6.5-7.5 lbs./ around $1600 that I can use on my lap to perform mostly basic computing needs. I will occasionally travel with it, but will usually have external power. I would like to view DVDs, listen to music, and store images on the machine. I really like the full keyboard on the zd series, but have read reviews that it runs hot (doesn’t sound good…as I really do use my laptop on my lap 95% of the time). Any advice?

I’ve never used a forum/chat and obviously I’m not computer savvy, so advanced apologies for any lack of etiquette.

If you are going to use it on your lap, I'd be looking more at ultraportables, and get a Pentium M if you are going to use it on lap 95 %. I would not look at the zd series (8000), as your preferred weight is 7.5 lbs tops. The zd8000 starts at 9.3 lbs, too heavy for lap use.

look at the Ebay. There are some original boxed ZT3000s. I got one with 1.7Ghz for about $1000.

Yes, I guess I’m an outlier as I’m NOT fond of ultraportables. I like to sit cross-legged and any notebook under 12” in width is shaky on my lap. I really like the way the wider-slightly heavier notebooks feel in my lap. I currently use a Toshiba A75-S2762 17” widescreen at 8 lbs and I’m happy with it except for the overheating.
So, basically I’m dreaming about a notebook width of 14”+ with Pentium M or some other cool running technology.
That brings me back to the Hp zt3000, but Hp no longer offers it…URGG! Other retailers still offer the zt3000, but I’m concerned that I will not get the protection/ warranty that I desire.

I found a reputable dealer that has the Zt3280 (Pent.M 1.6 Ghz ) and the Zt3380 (Pent. M 1.7 Ghz.). The best that I can tell, the rest of the specs are the same. The price gap is $250, is there a noticeable difference between the 1.6 Ghz and 1.7 and would it be advised to spend the extra bucks for the difference?
