HP initially sent me a defective dv5t, so after some hassle, they sent me a new one with the understanding that I'll send the old one back to them. What happens if I don't, other than going to hell?

Not sure how that works in the US, but you'd likely be warned and then sued by HP here in Europe.

Some people. Enough people do this to them (and I'm pretty sure they will still get it or the $$ equivalent out of you), they will no longer send advanced-placement units.

Just send the computer back as agreed. You will get charged for a new one and/or will ruin your credit. It's called stealing and fraud on your part.

I returned a defective laptop once and told me not to send the accessories. I got a new laptop with accessories back. They told me it was for my trouble. Now I have extras that I can leave one at home and one for trips.
