With a USB 2.0 hardrive i get like 18 mbps when connected to the usb2.0 port and 21-23 mbps when connected to the USB 3.0 port.

Im using the renesas driver which i got from the HP site.

I remember before i used to get like 30 mbps with the same hardrive on any port.

Also theres this USB 3.0 hardrive which my friend and i used to get 70 mbps (but it slowed down to 40) but now i get like 30 mbps from start to finish.

His harddisk is a Western digital, dont remember the model name.

is this because of the renesas driver? i was using the nec driver first.

I get a little over 70mb/s sustained on my usb 3.0 enclosure with a 500gb 2.5'' western digital black drive and on my usb 2.0 enclosure with a 3.5 500gb black i get roughly 30 mb/s sustained.

The controller on the external hard drive could definitely drag down performance as well. Typically I use a Vantec USB 3.0 enclosures which pretty much run at the hard drive's native speeds.

I also just noticed that you mentioned in your OP that u were using the hp driver and i thought id mention that i used whatever drivers windows update installed. Im not sure if this makes a huge difference but i thought id add it in there anyway.

Just a few observations in working with USB 3.0, I have picked up on:

Windows 7 does not currently have built-in USB 3.0 support (not certain if there were any changes to it with the release of SP1). Such support will not natively come from a Windows OS until Windows 8 is released. For the time being, it is necessary to install the third-party drivers from a manufacturer's site, after which, the controller should pick up on it and USB 3.0 should work just fine. But to note, if for whatever reason this driver is not installed, the port will default back to USB 2.0. It is also worthy to mention that some USB 3.0 devices will not be seen when Windows boots during safemode or any minimalized startup, due to the fact that Windows will not load the proper drivers during this occurance. You can however, simply move the device to the USB 2.0 side of your notebook and it will boot with and be seen by Windows during startup. Windows 7 doesn't seem to be as picky when using a USB 2.0 device in your USB 3.0 port during boot/startup, though.
