The PM965 chipest in the 8510P is designed to support up pto 4GB of ram, however some members over at the Dell forum have successfully used 6gb of ram on their Inspiron 1720 (also with a PM965 chipest).
To be safe, I'd stick with 4gb (2x2gb) unless you have a single stick of 4gb ram to spare.

The Santa Rosa chipset (PM965/GM965) supports 8GB RAM but some notebooks are limited through the BIOS. There are many threads about that around.

HP has been advertising and selling their workstation models with 8GB RAM for some time now.

That's odd because both the UK's and Canada's HP website both cite 4gb as the max amount of ram supported. Could be a typo though.
