HP has a utility that allows you to make recovery discs (with a recovery partition that big, it'll probably take 7-8 blank DVD's) that you can use to backup that partition. I also personally used Macrium Reflect to put it on an external hard drive in case the discs don't work. Once it's backed up, you can delete the partition and still be ready to recover your system if need be.

Do other HP Envy 14 users delete their partition? Is it safe? How do you delete the partition??

As long as you made a set of recovery media when you did, it is safe to delete when you reformat Windows. However, if you didn't make a set of recovery media and you do reformat it, be severely warned that when you do need to recover your computer due to a problem, you won't have it and that could get difficult with you needing to go acquire a copy of Windows 7 to reinstall...

Hey I am using the original hard drive as external storage now but kept the recovery partition on it. Can I restore from it connected through usb or it has to be in the computer?

unfortunately for some of us, our recovery discs don't work anymore (hey yes, I would like your bios update to break recovery discs made before that bios update. Thank you HP)

oh well, never really planned on using 'em

i actually have windows ultimate cd that i can install. in that case i can just delete the recovery partition.. (esp, i dont like the stock envy's home premium) since it does nothing really. if something were to happen on my computer it is probably severe and can only be solved with a fresh windows install.

Its definitely not hard to obtain a copy of windows. There's a link of how to do it in the envy 14 lounge. Your windows code is under your battery too. Plus almost all the drivers you need are listed in the lounge too.

I did a fresh install but you don't need to recovery partition if you've made backup discs. For some reason my replacement 14 came with recovery discs which was nice.

If i had known this, it would have saved me three tries at recovering factory settings after a hard drive crash. :|
But I don't really regret it. I'm enjoying my clean install :)
