I keep hearing about the controversy about output of hdmi. like, can you have video output from an hdmi port?
For example, the hp dv4 has an hdmi port. can i get an hdmi cable and just hook it up to my tv?
thanks!

Video, yes for sure. The part where people debate about is the audio, which not all notebook has an output through the HDMI, it is due to the GPU and its drivers mainly.
My HP8510p's ATI GPU does video and audio output fine. -
yeah you can with the dv4t. I hook it up to my tv and I get audio and video. I have the intel graphics chip

mydv6700 can output both as well.

You can almost always output audio from HDMI. Most people just don't know that they have to change the sound settings and complains that audio's not working even though it's a PEBKAC.

You can have audio output on the HDMI if you connect it to an HDCP compatable device. There are sound card drivers for the HDMI port on ATI laptops (drivers from realtek). However ATI has been reported as having alot of issues with recievers from Denon, Onkyo, and Yamahaa.

You can output to a HDTV or monitor, as long as they support the HDMI interface. -
Been trying to figure out how to output multichannel audio via HDMI... and so far, I'm only able to get 2-channel sound... I don't have the HP Dock so I can't use SPDIF... was wondering if anyone was successful in outputting multichannel audio through HDMI?
What is this "hdmi output problem" i keep hearing about?
