So I had a R3000 two years ago w/ brightview, and the screen was nice and bright. Ordered a V2000 for cousin about a year ago, the JBL version, brightview w/ very bright screen.

So my brother just recently ordered a HP dv1000 with brightview, the screen was soo dark (even with brightness max), and you have to look at a certain angle to not see those dark spots, I thought it was just his laptop, I helped ordered another dv1000 for my buddy a few weeks ago, his also had bad viewing angle, I compared it with my cousin's v2000, and there was a huge difference... what is up with the new screens? my other brother just recieved his dv5000z, it looks a bit better than the dv1000 but it is still not as bright as my r3000... HmmMmmmmMm.. i'm going to order a new v2000.. but with those screens.. iono.. anybody know what i'm talking about?

I was close to ordering a v2000z also.. but that came in mind..

well the dark looking spots look like those Old Old big screen projection TV and Old Old lcd laptop screens.. IE: if your a bit on the side or a bit high or a bit low, you can't see parts of it well.. you have to be looking at it perfectly straight on the center..

I have a v5000z w/brightview. I think you got a bum one, and should contact hp. Its VERY bright, compared with my old laptop.

Hmm.. yeah I think the recent laptop we have purchased are probably ALL defective or something, i mean it is viewable, it is just super ANNOYING.. and watching movies on the two dv1000 is horrible..no point in being multimedia if you can't see half of the stuff..

i forgot.. i also ordered an DV4000 for my roommate recently.. and it is bright though...

    but thanks for the input..

I used to live in Minneapolis!

P.S. thinking about it, all of our Compaq and HP laptop's, we have had to send it back at least ONCE to get it repaired for defective things.. great service though.. i think they have bad quality control though(@ the factory and at the repair factory) .. had to send it back again after it getting repaired because they put in a wrong motherboard for my r3000.. ( i would believe that if they do it right the first time, it'll save them money later.. but guess not? ) ..somehow i'm still purchasing from them though.. :p

So do l. My current PC and my PC before that were both HP's and l haven't really had any hardware problems with either of them (except my last HP's modem started burning somehow after we got it and we just returned it for another).

I managed to fry the x700 in my dv4000, but I think I ended up with a bum heat spreader in that system ... We'll see what the nice warranty service techs say.

Before that, though, my screen on the dv4000 was perfect!

About a week ago, playing Quake 4 for a very long time. I mentioned it in the Games sub-forum up in hardware, though I intend to do a little write-up of the whole warranty repair experience once I get it back. Of course, when they told me to choose a business day when FedEx could pick it up I said, "Monday!" without realizing that Monday was a holiday... So because of my own lack of holiday-awareness it's being picked up for repair this coming Monday, the 27th. D'oh!

I'm really interested to see how much information they'll give me about the problem and the repair I get.

well instead of ordering a v2000z..i found the L2000 to be cheaper.. so i went ahead and got one of those.. :D i was never looking forward to a L2000 because I would think it would be wayy more expensive.. but after calculating a lot of final prices, with same or better configurations (dv1000, v2000z, l2000, toshiba, some other laptops).. the L2000 is cheaper and better! .. and looks nice!.. i prefer the dark look.. i'm tired of the silver look (it's too bright on my eyes and it looks kinda tacky now :p )

when i get it i'll probably compare it side by side to all the hp/compaq laptops i help ordered for family/friends.. dang it! hp should pay me for this..
