What processor fits best in DV6? i7-720QM or i5-460M? (Heat/power related).

Hi, i've got an HP pavilion DV5 with an intel c2d t3200+9600MGT, it is 1 1/2 y old and i've sold it to one familiar.

I'm going to buy a new DV6, and i've got several interesting offers.

    1. i7-720QM - 4GBDDR3, 500GB, HDTV tuner, HD5650
    2. i5-460M - 4GBDDR3, 640GB, Intel HD+ 5650HD

1st sku costs from 70-160€ more than the 2nd one.

both are aluminum models, in the spanish store correspond to dv6-3181ss and 3165SS.

what sku would you choose and why?

I'm concerned with heat & dissipation, is an i7 a lot for a 15.6" inch model?

I'll be on several hours a day, nearly 6-5h.

Not used mainly for gaming, but i'd rather use it sometimes. Maybe 10-20% of it's use would be related to gaming, the rest for others (word, excel,, blogging, some video edit (not too much).

I'm considering buying the i5 model, but specs wise, do not now if the i7 is much more powerful than the i5 version.

What do you reccomend me? thanks a lot.

Sorry about my English, it is not my native language.

    Cheers!

Personally I would choose the i5 because it will be slightly cooler and give better battery life and I don't do anything that requires a quad-core i7. In very heavily threads applications the i7 is going to win easily but otherwise they would be similar.

i5, i7 was the worst decision for me. The heat and battery life is just sickening.

hi, thanks, Heat is a problem for me, but battery doesn't, it'll be a portable desktop replacement, not big, nor small, but it should have a perfect balance between power & heat.

I've got and HP mini netbook for external battery purposes.

Is i5 460M much worse than the i7-720qm?

It isn't worse, It is better for multi-tasking and multi threaded applications, unfortunately I don't do anything that comes close to utilizing the cores and threads so an i5 would have been better suited for me. Although the new Sandybridge i7's seem to have fixed the heat and battery lief issues by quite a bit, which may still have me buying an i7, since a lot of people wouldn't really need the processing speeds that i5's can reach, but mainly choose it for the battery life and cooler temps.
