I've been looking at the dv5t laptops with an infinity display. I just don't know what resolution I should get?
I do you reading glasses. But is the size difference that big of a deal between the two?
Which do you think I should get?
    1680 x 1050 OR 1280 x 800?

    Resolution, not screen size. :p
What they fail to mention, is that the 1680 x 1050 will have a much better dpi than the 1280 x 800. So if you get the 1680 x 1050, and downsize it to 1280 x 800, it will have a lot more clarity than the 1280 x 800.

I personally like the extra space of 1680 x 1050, all you have to do are some rather small settings changes to increase text and icon size and you should be good to go with a lot more space =)

Here's some resolution comparisons I found (I guess here, lol) when researching resolutions awhile back. From left to right we have 1280 x 800, 1440 x 900, and 1680x1050

I went with the 1280x800. Try going to Best Buy and see if the 1280x800 suits your needs. Unfortunately, the 1680x1050 will be hard to find for you to see in person. I use this for school and internet for the most part, but a little bit of gaming. I always make my windows full size and have really no need to have them side by side. So pretty much it is up to you. And if you get 1680x1050, no matter what anyone says, if you downsize it to 1280x800, it will never be as clear as if you went with the 1280x800 screen.

What you could do, if you decide to get the 1680x1050, is increase the dpi to 120 and that will make things more readable.

i battled with this decision. i originally got a 1280X800. Then HP sent me a dv5 with a defective speaker, so they offered to send me a replacement with some upgrades. So I debated and debated, scoured the net for answers, went to some stores, but none had WSXGA+.. I chickened out and stuck with 1280x800. So THEN hp messed up and didnt send me a laptop with the proper upgrades, so I had an opportunity to get a replacement for my REPLACEMENT LOL. I decided that I would just increase dpi and bite the bullet and go for WSXGA+. Well, before an order could be placed they stopped customizing dv5t's... jesus.. so now, i'm getting a dv7t with the WSXGA+ as my replacement.. but, ideally i would go with the WSXGA+ on dv5t. i've never experienced it, but as someone who has debated and debated and debated it, i'll just go ahead and recommend going for the higher res. screen. i hear windows 7 is going to have fairly flawless dpi conversion. so go for the 1680X1050. thank you and goodnight.

Here it is...120dpi on the left and 96dpi on the right. Looks crisp still even at a larger dpi...worth a look.

Let me know what you think...if it's too big, you could choose a dpi setting in between. Maybe 110dpi, that's perfect.

Display resolution (more accurately, pixel count) directly relates to image detail. Higher resolution = greater detail.

A standard 1280x800 display has 1,024,000 pixels. A 1680x1050 display has 1,764,000 pixels...or 740,000 more within the same space. The latter (WSXGA+) is going to be capable of displaying sigificantly higher levels of detail.

Initially, text, icons and images will be displayed significantly smaller on a higher resolution display than on a standard 1280x800. This is because Windows (Vista and XP, I believe) has a default icon size of 96 DPI (dots per inch). There is also an option to increase size to the 120 DPI or specify a custom size. FYI- to do this, Right Click on Desktop>Properties>Settings>Advanced> General Tab.
