I personally like HP laptops but i have noticed they all have really weak video cards, they should at least put a decent one in the dv6xxx series or its replacement and for the dv9xxx replacement allow for removable video card(just single slot so it doesn't compete with voodoo)

also they could give a choice of 1980x1200

Although I too really like (and own several) H-P's laptops - I think they should update their graphics cards too. I really like how slim they are but that probably contributes to their inability to adequately cool hotter cards. A smart move on their part would be to go to the Nvidia 8600GS (or whichever 9-series card follows the 8600) on the follow-on to the 6700. LED backlight would be nice too.

I've used nothing but HP Laptops for about 5 years. I've tried to switch to others like Dell, or Toshiba, but I don't think HP can be beat from a price->performance standpoint. All of that said, there are always other notebooks that are 'better', but always at too steep a premium for me to buy.

Here's what I'd like to see:

Color options - The imprint finish looks nice, but it's so susceptible to fingerprints. I like the Dell Inspiron color options for $25

Video Cards - I use the PS3 for gaming now, but it would be nice to see some high end options.

CPU Choice - Still wondering why I couldn't get a 2.4g C2D on my dv9700t. Seems an odd choice to preclude that option.

Full HD Screen Resolution Option - 1080p at a minimum as luidimario01 called out.

Solid State Boot Drives for Vista. I'll take a 7200rpm speed demon for program files etc..but I'd like to see the operating system installed on a SS drive.

I'd like to see some improvements in the battery. How about a LiPoly pack?

    Expert user toggle in BIOS.

Magnetic AC power plug (yes, steal that from Apple. It's a great idea). I'd like a jack on both sides of the chassis too.

I want an OEM OS Install Disc so I can do a clean install on a blank HD anytime I want.

Blu-Ray Burner at a reasonable price.

My last three keyboards have rattled on the dv9xxx chassis. No excuse for this.

    That's my wish list.

They should inprove the video card and maybe change the design up a bit make it look more sleek

I'd like to see HP's AMD notebooks switch over to AMD/ATI chipsets. NVIDIA's power efficiency isn't as good. I've been impressed by the AMD790X chipset in my desktop PC.

    Better GPUs.

Expert user toggle in the BIOS! Absolutely. And the magnetic AC power plug. And proper OEM OS install disc, or at least an easy way of downloading one.

Make it easier to clean out the CPU heatsink and change the CPU. The zv5000 did it right but nothing I've bought since then has.

Get rid of that idiotic WiFi card BIOS whitelist!

Improve HD cooling. I've picked up some great deals on used HP notebooks with fried HDs, but...

Sleek? I can't imagine my wife's Verve or my HDX being much more sleek.

One of the many reasons I stick with HP is the use of nVidia cards. Every three months or so, I round-up and install the current crop of Linux distro's: Fedora, Ubuntu, SuSe, Mandriva - to see if Linux is ready for the desktop yet (in my view). I haven't seen great support for ATI in Linux. nVidia support is pretty common. So, I'll give up a little efficiency for native support in Linux.

One other little thing I'd add to my wishlist is for HP to fix the apic boot issue with just about every linux distro.

ATI Linux support has been improving rapidly since AMD released ATI programming info. Before that I favored NVIDIA too.

Nicer 17" keyboard layout, the tiny right shift key is yucky. More user programmable media hotkeys.

SDHC support in the media card reader.

    Better built in microphone.

Good one. Keyboard layout on 17" models needs to be fixed. The right-hand shift key is a travesty.

I also echo the need for a 1900x1200 display. It just makes no sense to have a nice big 17" screen with such low resolutions.

I think they should make the power plug magnetic and make a seamless touchpad. the seamless touchpads feel awesome. design is awesome, I dont think they should touch it. but they should definitely put the 8600gt, then the laptop in my opinion would be the best.

    1. keep up the great design and included features
    2. better BUILT quality - pay more attention to minor details like keyboard flex
    3. less BLOATWARE - and include a fresh copy of the os
    4. work on quickplay - the software is still too slow for regular use.

am i the only one who thinks the video cards should be swappable or at least make an affordable gaming system

Great idea about the power plug. HP currently has big problems with the power plugs breaking if there's stress on them. A magnetic one would be really nice (but it probably patented by apple)

True apple may have patented it. But c'mon with nowaday technology, HP should be able to do it with "minor" changes so as not to piss off apple. I definitely think that there are ways to do it without doing anything illegal. The question remains, Is hp that dedicated to consumers?. I can tell you one thing, Apple IS. the magnetic power plug is probably one of the greatest technological discoveries. Imagine never having to worry about yanking on the plug or the pin getting cracked from motherboard. How many ppl have had to throw away their laptops because of the power plug being broken. geez what a world we live in. where companies fight and the only one suffering is us consumers.

What I would like to see in the future replacements of the dv2700t :

    - a better touchpad which feels nice to use (personal preference)
    - at least put in a 256mb 8600 nvidia card
    - higher res screen that uses LED technology
    - slimmer and lighter machine, perhaps something like the xps m1330, if it needs to be a bit more thicker than that, its fine
    - bluetooth hp remote that charges itself in the expresscard slot
    - better webcam and mic
    - illuminated keyboard, just like the macbook pro
    - battery life indicator on battery just like the macbook's and dell
    - replace the expansion port and add in 2 more usb ports

Not to hijack a thread, but with the discussion around Apple innovations and their dedication to consumers, check this bad johhny out: The Thinnest Laptop in the World. 3lbs and 3/4", no optical drive, and they have a SS option like I asked for earlier (for $1300!)

    hehe

They should make the DC in connector replaceable like on the 61 series ThinkPad’s where it’s screwed in and not soldered.

I would also like to see more use of:
    1. Lithium Polymer batteries
    2. LED LCD
    3. Lighted keyboards

    Lighted Keyboards
    led display
    better graphics card

But the most important thing that I would want in a Hp is durabilty. I hate when I pick up my laptop and it bends and makes cracking sounds. It would be great if my laptop would feel sturdy. I have noticed that my ac socket is starting to get a little loose. I rarely use it. I have the expansion base so it gets charged through there.

Here is what I would like to see:

    1. Get rid of the gloss black. It always looks dirty and scratches show up really easy. Don't know why all electronics have gone glossy these days. I hate it.

    2. Re-design the battey area so a 9 cell does not raise the back up.

    3. Make the fans less noisy

    3. Do not put a bilingual keyboard on Canadian laptops (we don't care about the french)

    4. Try to make it a little slimmer

    5. Put the ethernet plug on the same side as the power cord and atleast 1 usb port, so i do not have cords coming out of both sides when using it on my desk a home.

    6. Include the recovery discs (probably only cost them a few extra cents)
