So I have the new dv6t, 6100 model, with 5 days left to return the case, 20 days left to return the laptop.

    I also have a 2010 15" Macbook pro.

    My dv6t is

    2720QM
    8GB RAM
    6770 w/2GB VRAM
    750GB 7200RPM
    1080p Matte screen

    vs.

    i5 450M
    8GB RAM
    330m w/256mb VRAM
    1440x900 glossy screen

I was enjoying the apple "ecosystem", but the whole Windows + Windows Phone + Xbox thing has started to appeal to me more and more, so I got this HP.

With the graphics issue, should I stick to Apple (I don't like where Lion is going), or is this HP machine really a decent bet?

Where OpenGL 3D apps don't cause the AMD graphics to swtich on.

Not a huge issue, I suppose...

I'm playing with it now, and I kind of missed Windows. Its so colorful compared to OS X these days (like they reversed roles), and Microsoft is starting to pick their game up, too.

Also, best of all, I'm in love with this matte screen. Perhaps I should take it to work with me tomorrow, and see how it deals with my daily workload.

It's all in what you're going to use it for. If you're going to use it to run OpenGL software all day long that's going to be an issue. If not it's a heck of a lot of hardware for the price. I get my dv7t next week and at first I was hell bent on sending it back but after thinking about I'm going to keep it. I only use Photoshop once and a while and I'm guessing AMD or HP will release something to either put a manual switch in or make OpenGL play nice with the 6770 at some point. For some it's a deal breaker for others it's not. I just tried configuring other laptops from other venders and even with coupons couldn't come close to the specs in my sig for what I paid for the dv7t.

I personally don't have the dynamic graphics problem, but I don't think you should worry about it too much. I'm guessing it is something that AMD/Intel/HP will be able to patch easily. [PC fanboy rant] I personally think the a PC is a much better deal that the Mac, and you HP is definelty better than your Mac [/PC fanboy rant]

So I don't think I run anything that uses OpenGL, anyway. I was a big PC guy up until a few years ago, but now I realize that I kind of miss those days, too.

I'm a CS major, so the screen real-estate and resources of this major will benefit me greatly. I mean really, for the price, I'm getting so much more computer here.
