I have brand new dv6700t and I am running HWMonitor and Intel TAT (Thermal Analysis Tool) temp monitoring tools to keep an eye on my notebook's temp readings. I noticed that when I laptop is sitting on my bed, its temp shoots way higher than when its on my lap, because of the reason its fan underneath cant breath when on bed. This is what I noticed:
On bed:
Starting from sleep::::::::::::::::::::::::: ~30 Degrees C.
Laying Idle:::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::: ~55 Degrees C.
Mild use (Checking emails, usual chores): ~60-65 Degrees C.
Heavy use (Games):::::::::::::::::::::::: ~75 Degrees C.
CPU cores @ 100% using Intel TAT:::::: ~86 Degrees C.![]()
![]()
(The last one almost made me freeze in awe)
Now when on my lap, with fan underneath sucking full air (Plz tell if its in normal temp range, or is it still hotter than normal??):
Starting from sleep::::::::::::::::::::::::: ~30 Degrees C.
Laying Idle:::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::: ~50 Degrees C.
Mild use (Checking emails, usual chores): ~55 Degrees C.
Heavy use (Games):::::::::::::::::::::::: ~65 Degrees C.
CPU cores @ 100% using Intel TAT:::::: ~70-74 Degrees C.![]()
How is your processor doing in general use and when under Intel TAT's 100% load?? Please post your temp readings??
Now, my question is what is the normal temp at which CPU operates and what happens if it gets hotter than that.. and since I cant always keep laptop on my lap, what other surfaces should I use to keep it cool (I can't always carry a laptop cooler with me.. any other suggestion????)
Thanks for help folks!!!!!!!

Any solid surface is fine to rest the laptop on. a desk even a piece of wood. another good thing would be to prop up the back of the laptop with anything. basically the back should be a little higher, anything but a bed. second 50C at idle, is basically normal.and 65C for running it at full speed with games is also pretty normal.
Just keep the laptop off the bed and you'll be fine. -
Yes those sound about right. Make sure non of the air vents are blocked or the temps WILL skyrocket like showed on the bed temps
Your lap temps look about right aswell. My max temps was 75c before using a stress test but after i undervolted it dropped down to 63-65c
I suggest you undervolt if you want a cooler laptop and gain more battery life. It will not affect performance at all. -
What is a stress test? I would like to carry out one myself!

A stress test will put 100% full load on your CPU to try and stress it out. Its a good idea to watch the temps and see how high it goes
Download ORTHOS cpu loader here
Open the program, click on start and let it run for around 10mins. Make sure you HWmonitor to monitor the temps -
Yeah I will do that. Adding it currently to my ever growing 'to do' list! lol

Can you or someone else with Penryn T9300 plz post your temp readings with Intel TAT at idle, mild, heavy and 100% load.... -
I frankly don't see any reason why a Penryn would run cooler. Adding to it I don't see many differences between Santa Rosa and Penryn. Surprisingly Santa Rosa was a huge step forward when compared to its predecessor. So don't be depressed prabhg. Getting a Penryn as soon as it was released would have been nothing more than a stunt to spill hard earned money of yours. Wait for Montevina after which you could upgrade your processor, I believe.

I never actually get around to benchmarking my cpu. though I don't think it's that much better then the 7xxxx series. I mean it is 45nm and all, prob a bit cooler, and more power efficient but other then that, not much.

Pretty much what I feel as well Yitzter, as I said above.

I think you would be able to upgrade the processor to Montevina when it comes out. It will be releasing in May or June. And yes Processors are hard to upgrade but definitely possible. Let someone else drop in and comment if an upgrade to Montevina would be possible or not.
What temp is your notebook processor is running at??
