What temps are you all getting in your envy 15's?

I'm a bit concerned over the temps my envy 15 is reaching, especially because it is currently new and dust-free and in time it's cooling capabilities will deteriorate. I have the 2670qm.

Running prime95 for a few hours with my laptop sitting on a desk, monitor open at a 90 degree angle, room temp ~ 70 F, I reached 93 degrees C.

Playing team fortress 2 or left 4 dead 2 with multicore rendering enabled, the CPU also reaches 90 degrees C. Now, my CPU load is significantly lower when playing these games than when running prime95, but I presume that the heat from my GPU causes my gaming temps to get so close to my l4d2 temps. (My GPU stays at a comfortable <= 83 degrees C).

Now, I understand that auto-throttling doesn't occur until 100 C, but these temps still seems unusually high. In particular, I'm concerned about the longevity of my laptop, and such extreme temperatures may very well be slowly damaging something even if the CPU is rated for them on paper.

I'd like to hear your temps to compare and know whether something is wrong with my laptop. Hopefully this is the case and I can just pick up a replacement that runs much cooler.

EDIT: Also, I idle around 50.

    what processor you have?

i have the lowest i7 2670m and i auto-throttle at 77c checked it with throttlestop4.0 the logs confirm it

i posted proof in another thread

    do you have anything overclocked?

    did you disable HP coolsense?

i cannot get above 85c on CPU and 76c on GPU unless i overclock or use throttlestop

You say you can't get above 85 C without throttlestop? Are you sure the CPU is throttled at 85? When I ran prime95 for a couple hours and reached 92, I monitored the clock speed of all four cores and they all were at 2.4 ghz, i.e. no throttling.

EDIT: I ran prime95 and reached 90+, and according to throttlestop, no throttling occurred. (CMod and Chip stayed at 100%).

Also, throttlestop reported temperatures 3-4 C lower than HWMonitor. Shouldn't they just be receiving data from the same sensors?

you had it on flat surface yes? no blockages?

i currently run it on flat desk no elevation stands and i cannot get above 85c using ONLY throttlestop to stop the throttling, the GPU is left untouched

    see this link
    http://forum.notebookreview.com/hp-envy-hdx/639179-envy-15-3xxx-throttles-cpu-even-78c.html

you need to log the activity to really see the throttling, it only occurs for a few seconds then jumps back up but it happens as early as 77c, this type of throttling is what causes stuttering in games

the other throttling you are thinking of at 100c is the step before autoshutdown

i have reached 95c when using throttlestop AND afterburner overclocking GPU AND playing with it on my lap with a cushion (restricted air flow) playing SWTOR, so yes i have seen those high temps which is why i removed afterburner overclock and play on flat surface

FYI using a notebook stand probably drops temps a few degrees while gaming because of more airflow, but you won't notice it idling

    i idle around 45-50c
