I found a used nc8430 on the internet and I'm going to take a look in a few days. Now I was wondering if you guys have any tips. Mainly what to look for to see if everything is ok with the laptop.

Well check for dents and cracks. There should be some scratches especially on the lid depending on how used it is. Also check the keyboard for loose/damaged keys and the hinges of the LCD. Also run Dead Pixel Buddy(goggle it) to check for dead pixel on the screen. Use Notebook Hardware Control and Everest Ultimate to check if the system is as advertised and the battery wear.

Also, run the standard benches that are in the writing my review section of the webpage. They'll stress out the system fairly well to ensure everything is working correctly.

If you have time, run Memtest86+ to check the ram for errors. I recommend you run at least for more then a couple of hours preferably overnight but depending on the situation it might not be necessary.

    and good luck.
