I just ordered a dv9700t (2.5 Ghz, 6MB L2 Cache, 800MHz FSB, 2GB DDR2 Ram, Nvidia 8600GS). Unfortunately, I loaded it with only 2 gigs ddr2, but i wanna order a 3rd. I called HP and tried to get them to throw another gig in before they shipped but they wouldn't. Anyone have advice as to what is the best/most compatible ram with a 9700t?

    Any 2gb DDR2 667 200-pin laptop memory will do

HP charges alot for extra RAM. Do not buy it from them, you will get ripped off badly

Like Flipfire said, manufacturers over charge on RAM. You're always better off buying on your own. Check out the Ram Deals thread, as well as Buy.com, and Newegg.com

What's the difference betwen the 5300 and 5400? And what exact kind of ram would you suggest? price does not matter! And should I jump to 3GB or 3.5GB, givin 32bit Vista can read 3.5...right? :/

I think pc-5400 is 800mhz but its pointless because it gets clocked down to 667mhz anyway.

All ram is nearly created equally. Doesnt matter which brand or what price. Though i do suggest getting a known brand like corsair, transcend or kingston for warranty and support purposes

I suggest going for 2x2gb setup. It will run on dual channel and will be more futureproof. RAM is very cheap to pass this out. Vista 32 will read roughly 3gb

PC2-5300 and PC2-5400 is the same thing.

    -Hot ram deals thread.

    800mhz is DDR2- 6400

32bit version of any OS will read about ~3GB some times more or less depending on what kind of hardware(GPU etc) you have.

PC2-5300 and PC2-5400 run at the same exact clock speed. They are the same. I think the latency may be different, but that doesn't matter, whichever is cheapest.

Is it SO DIMM? I hope it is because I read it as a SDRAM!

The only difference is that one company's marketing department decided to make theirs sound like it was 100 "better" than the other guys.

On newegg.com memory page, their are 2GB RAMs listed from same manufacturer with around same price, but one is 1 stick of 2GB and other is 2 sticks of 1GB each. But 1Gb sticks are listed as "dual channel kit notebook memory model" while one stick of 2GB is listed just as "notebook memory model".
Is one better than the another???

Nope...its just convenient for the end user/marketing.

BTW, More memory is better than "dual channel"

I am planning on buying another notebook, but this time just ordering 1GB ram on it, and buy another 2gb stick and make it 3GB memory total??
    Does it sound good idea??

Q: Does memory work better and faster if I have 2gb x 2 (total 4gb) ram, though I know 32-bit wont identify it all??

If you order 1GB then you will get 2 modules of 512MB each. There are only 2 slots in the laptop, so you can only keep 512MB if you want to put in more. If you buy a 2GB module, then you can have up to 2.5GB, which isn't bad, but if you want more you'll have to buy another 1GB or 2GB module.

Is my HP gonna come with 2 modules?? And, if so, are they both going to be filled with 1GBx2 setup, or 2GBx1? And, say it comes with 2GBx1 and I get another 2GBx1, obviously making it 4GB total, will 32bit read the second stick as much as possible (probably up to 3GB), or since the 4GB total is unreadable, will the OS completely neglect to read the whole 2GB stick leaving me, again, with an active 2GB's and a completely useless 2GB?? I hope ya understood all that :)

It's going to be 1GBx2. It will read 3GB or a little more.

Most laptops, if you order 2GB of ram it will always come in 2x1GB order. Unless specified that you only want 1 DIMM, in which case it will most likely cost you more.

Usually the real custom laptops allow you to choose your ram setup.

I'm gonna order another 2GB stick and be forced to take a 1gb stick out, leaving me with 3gb of active ram. Would it be worth it to splurge for 2 sticks of 2GB, obviously making it 4gb (which we know is unreadable in a 32bit vista), but perhaps it will read 3.4, 3.5, 3.6 and so on...or will it stop reading shortly after 3 gigs, (3.1, 3.2) etc?? Recommendations?
