Insurance is a good idea, but not from them, their prices are way too high. I just plugged in the numbers for my notebook. $1800 home user, colorado, and recent purchase. It gave me a price of $108/year.
The personal articles policy I have through state farm insurance for the same amount $1800 is only $38/year for no deductible and the state farm is for replacement cost for a new notebook of the same model, the safeware site says that it does not do replacement cost ie. it take depriciation into consideration. That means in one year if your notebook were stolen, instead of giving you enough money to buy a new one of the same model, they would look up in a table to see what a one year old used notebook of that model is worth. So that $1,800 notebook that you bought a year ago may now have a new cost of $1,400, but a used notebook of that model that is one year old may only have a value of $900. So safeware would only be paying you $900 towards your replacement.

In short, go with a real insurance company. You will get a much better deal for 1/3 the cost.

After reading their site more thoughly, they do offer replacement cost, however their prices are about 3X more than statefarm insurance for the same coverage.

    Hi,

In the spirit of introducing another view, I just completed my order for the zv5000z and was so excited to hear about the insurance option. I rushed down to my agent at Allstate to find that they have nothing similar. The closest they could come up with was a renters policy that would cover a laptop as property but only if a calamity happens to my place. No separate coverage for damage or theft otherwise. At that, the policy is $250 a year. Having been insured by them for 25 years, no one can even come close to my rates so it doesn't make sense for me to switch.

Considering HP's offer is $99 a year, this insurance for $108 makes sense for me.

Thanks for all the information! This is a great site. [ :D]

Yeah, plus Safeware really does cover more than you would think.

I have never heard of a homeowners insurance policy that covers certain acts of god. I know they wouldn't cover lighting or surge damage.

Safeware states that they cover all electric damage regardless of source.
