What warranty comes with a "refurb" open-box HP laptop from CompUSA?

    The details:

CompUSA sometimes sells off open box / display unit notebooks as "Refurb". These are NOT factory refurbs. They are open box /display units that CompUSA denotes as Refurb.

My question is: What warranty comes with these? I got one and if I check the HP warranty site online (using the serial number), it is listed as having four months warranty, but that appears to be based on manufacture date and a 1 year standard warranty. If the so-called CompUSA refurb comes with a standard manufacturer's warranty, then that would trump the date online.

I know that licensed retailers of these things usually say that open box items come with full standard warranty. But since CompUSA has denoted this as a "refurb" (the refurb appears on the receipt), I wonder if the standard warranty would not apply.

    Anyone know for sure?

well... HP "real" refurbs came with 1 year warranty ... without possibility of upgrade... ( from 1 to 3 via a carepack)

Yeah, this is definitely not a "real" refurb (that is, a factory refurb). I have plenty of those, and they always come in a special box with the refurb designation clearly indicated on the box. This came in a standard retail (not refurb) box. And on the desktop is the icon to upgrade the warranty if I want.

This is an open box (display, return, whatever) reseal by CompUSA that they've chosen to designate refurbished for the purposes of sale. HP doesn't see it as a refurb in their system. But the receipt says "refurb". So my question remains whether it is eligible for the standard (1 year from date of sale) warranty?

Why not talk to online support and clear the matter up? Or have you asked CompUSA regarding the warranty?

EDIT: After typing up the below noticed KwadGuy posted the above question right at two months ago- 09-12-2007,, and it's now 11-20-2007 So I guess he found "his" answer...

Notice that KwadGuy didn't bother to post back his findings... Got to love those people who create a thread- asking for help.... and they NEVER post back..

While it is advisable to ask COMPUSA directly on what warranty applies.. It may be a case that HP and COMPUSA have a "agreement" in which OPEN-BOX items carry the same warranty- then again some mfg's have in the small print OPEN-BOX or Floor models don't carry the same warranty...
(I find especially stupid in the case of FLOOR models in which that display unit made them tons of sales for display/floor models to not receive a FULL warranty.)

I'd contact HP directly.... ask them what their polices are on OPEN-BOX items... and or go to HP and try to find the warranty terms and read thru it.

Keep in mind whatever is in WRITING on HP's site trumps whatever a rep may tell you, and trumps whatever people here may say.

PS: When contacting HP- I'd suggest contacting them via their live online chat so you will have a RECORD in writing of what the rep tells you.

On the unit being a refurb- that being on the ticket... that may or may not prove to be problematic... but really shouldn't matter since it's really OPEN-BOX, (E.G. a return)

A little over a year ago I bought a (NIB) HP nx6325 ($500 after rebate)... upon receipt of unit noticed the production date was like 7 or 8? months before that.... Sent in the rebate, Filling out the online form on HP.com, sending in the paperwork.... I think I may have registered unit online, can't remember...

Anyhow right at the year mark I took the unit in because the display hinges had play in them after very light use

When I checked how much remaining warranty was on the unit, the units warranty date was noted as a week AFTER the date of PURCHASE. (as noted on the receipt)

I say the above as it may affect what is showing on your warranty.. You said 4 months are showing as remaining... It "may" be a case that once you are registered with HP they go by the SALES DATE/Date of PURCHASE... and before you register they go by the production date.

The above being said ANTEC a mfg/distributor of computer products does NOT automatically "register" the product when sending in a "rebate".
(ANTEC goes by the production date if you don't have a receipt.)

I haven't researched warranty on HP refurbs-... but for any HP reps (or shills) reading this thread you may want to forward this thought to your boss.

"Sort of "tells" you something when a mfg won't allow a extension of the warranty on a "factory" refurbished item."

(Read that as they (the mfg) don't have any confidence in the product to allow customers to PURCHASE a care pack - if the item has truly been "refurbished" to like-new specs, why not allow customers to purchase a extension to the warranty?)
