I know HP allows up to 21 days for returns. However, what if the newly arrived laptop came in defective, and then I sent in for repair, and then it broke down again, and the back and forth time exceeded 21 days. Then I realized it was a bad choice to purchase a HP in the first place, will I still be able to return the HP notebook after the 21 days have passed?

Really? Are you even allowed to ban yourself? How does that work?

    Return it. Period.

I had to send in two faulty DV9700T's within 2 weeks. Yes, they wanted to repair them but you shouldn't have to repair a brand new computer. No way.

My third one has been in the shop almost 14 days - I only owned it for 32 days before it died.

Did I learn a lesson? Yes. Was it too late? Yes.

I'm ordering a Vostro 1700 before I go to bed tonight.

Don't take any chances. Don't go down the repair road. Read the horror stories about how people send their laptops in for repair and they come back with more problems and/or deep scratches in the lid.

Afaik, a Defective on Arrival (DOA) claim can be made within first 14 days of purchase if product is defective in any way. If purchased from HP direct, they will authorise a 1-for-1 swap with a new unit (if the notebook is defective, they will replace the notebook, but you retain all the other accessories). Apparently in the US, you have to send back the entire box for the replacement?

You *should* have returned it instead of repairing it, but that doesn't help you now. Does the system you have work correctly now? Are you still having issues with it, or are you just fed up with HP and want to get rid of it? If you call them and talk to customer service you might be able to convince them, but you will be lucky if you do. Otherwise, there's ebay.
