Get all the drivers for your computer and do a reformat. Install what you need after that

What if I only have HP pre-installed vista? What if I'm too lazy to reinstall my apps? :)

i have also read that other members have had problems sourcing certain drivers (mainly the webcam) after reformatting and reinstalling...

I wonder if you receive a Vista-installed DV6000T, if you could make another partition, and install a clean version of the same Vista (Home Premium) and use the key HP gives you?

    Anyone know if that's possible?

I can live with most of the HP junk, but how do I completely remove all the true crap (MSN, Get Vonnage, Easy Internet Access, AOL Signup, Vongo, Etc)?

Somebody told me something about removing that stuff from the registry? Anyone experienced at this? I don't like screwing around blindly with the registry.

get vonage, aol signup, vongo, etc are not installed. they are merely icons on the desktop, which are links to the internet. try clicking on them when your not connected.

but to remove any installed apps, go to the add/remove programs section in the control panel (its called something else in Vista, which i dont remember off hand)

if you want to get rid of all traces of these apps, just go into the registry and do a search for whatever app you want to remove and then delete any entries you see. The worst that could happen is that you bork your OS and you restore it from the recovery partition.

CCleaner usually does a decent job in cleaning up partial program deletions.

For those saying to just reformat, how do you you install a clean copy of Vista when HP only gives you their version? And I don't feel like buying a $200(non-upgrade) copy of Vista, or a $100+ OEM version.

I just got a DV6244 and I was wondering about the same thing.
Is it safe to uninstall the HP total care advisor? Or the Photosmart essential?

The $64,000 question. It was easy to create an XP disc from the i386 folder (and SWSetup) using nLite.

Vista is not so generous. It's an image based install. Might be more difficult to extract it from the recovery discs. FWIW, there's a Vista version of nLite named, surprise surprise, vLite.

You need neither, and can uninstall both if you wish, but the HP Total Care Advisor might be more valuable to you, at least in the beginning.

    From HP

"The HP Total Care Advisor (U.S. Only) is a collection of active support tools that monitor the operation of your hardware, and alert you to possible problems. and official HP solutions. To start, click the HP Total Care Advisor icon."

    and from CNET:

As for Photosmart Essential, you can always download it from HP (it's free) should you regret your decision to uninstall:
