My last laptop was a Compaq X1000.. I loved that thing.. it provided PLENTY of power until a few months ago when I finally sold it to a friend.

What was the successor to the X1000 and what has the Legacy turned into? Looking at Compaq's notebook line up.. I don't even see that they offer any dedicated graphics in their notebooks. The Radeon 9200SE in the X1000 was fantastic for it's time.. I'm not sure what really made the X1000 as popular as it was... maybe it was one of the first few 15.4" widescreeners at the time.. I know thats what got me looking at it in the first place.. Widescreen was just emerging in the notebook scene and I guess that it had dedicated graphics was another.

    So what's Compaq/HP's newest "X1000" type computer?

Probably the dv6500t. I'm actually using a X1000 right now. It was my first laptop, I love this thing, but the motherboard is starting to bug out. That and the wireless card isn't picking up anything. Still though, it has lasted for awhile now, 4-5 years.

Well, I believe the Compaq 6000 series used to be offered with dedicated graphics, but not anymore. The latest 15.4" consumer one would be the dv6500t, which is a decent notebook but with subpar graphics, really.

The upcoming HP Compaq 8510p might be the successor in terms of "specs" but it's a business notebook as opposed to a consumer one. So looks wise they'll be totally different :p

As an aside, the X1000 was my dream machine 4 years ago when I bought my first laptop. Sadly Compaq was months behind on the Canadian release and I couldn't wait.

Since my previous notebook was a Presario X1000 which I upgraded to one of those nc8430s, I'm tempted to say this too. Also mainly because the only notebooks from HP that matches the resolution options (up to WUXGA) offered for the X1000 can now only be found on the business models, so the 8510p/w is definitely a good upgrade path.
