    Recently, I had a minor issue on my HP Envy14 monitor and send it in for repair. Since, it was a hardware issue, the lead time was over 3 months. So, I called HP and they offered a loaner notebook. At the end, I received a loaner/replacement notebook.

    My problem is I wasn't informed that HP disposed of my OLD notebook completely. They didn't save the harddrive to give it back to me; so, all information/data was lost. So, theoretically speaking, can I go after HP for some compensation for my data? Weeks of data lost.

    Under HP warranty, HP isn't response for data/information lost in system restoration. However, I had a simple hardware issue, which didn't require a system restoration. So, my deduction, they lost all my information.

    My logic for some compensation is they can't dispose of my notebook without me saying so. I agreed to the replacement notebook, but not to the dispose of my notebook. Because they made me believe, this is a loaner notebook until they can fix my notebook. My notebook is my personal property and HP can't control what happens to it without my consent.

    It's your responsibility to back up your data to make sure something like this doesn't happen. Yes, it sucks, but no standard warranties offered by OEMs cover data loss (since it would be too expensive to recover data from a drive, especially if it's trashed). It's always a good idea to read warranties, EULAs, and all that legal stuff, though I know most people don't read it. If you try legal action against HP, they'll point out that nowhere in their contract with you do they say that your data is guaranteed to be safe, and nothing will be done.

    Just take this experience as a lesson learned, and remember to implement a backup plan in the future to regularly back up your data.

    I understand it is my responsibility (learned the tough way).

    I guess my question is can't I hold HP responsible for my data/information because I had NO hardware issue except for a few dead pixel? And without warning, they disposed of my notebook as if it wasn't working from a like two dead pixels. I remembered signing a paper if I wanted to keep my data, they will help me keep my data in ONLY My Document section.

    I just felt HP should had warned about disposing of my hard-drive when my notebook had only two dead pixels. Everything worked flawlessly.

    Yeah, that seems a bit overkill to trash the whole thing over the display. especially since they could have replaced the display easily.

    Agreed. Most likely it becomes refurbished.
