You can get dv series for less with same specs
They to expensive
-
.....and your point is?
-
Don't you know that more expensive means it's better?!
-
Well for me the design wins were the battery slice, and the original plans to sacrifice the ODD for a second HDD in the E15.
-
The weight distributation on them is pretty good. I can fling one across the room with little effort.
-
I don't think its worth removing the Optical Disk drive for a second drive space... somemore there are fewer ports in the envy compared to my Dv5 and worst of all you don't get what you pay for so i would say , don't buy envy..
-
It's for Mac envy folks.
If you have the money, go for it. -

It's for guys with [edited] envy. they want a machine that makes them stand out. in the end, it's the same as, like you said, the regular ol' dv series.
my 2nd idea is that it's a product made for the pre-recession people that had way too much money on their hands and not enough tech expertise to see that the envy series are a slight better PC at double the price. -
-
In any event, might be worth the extra coin to some because it offers configs you can't get in the DV series.
But I think HP is also countering Dell's Adamo with the Envy as well as the Mac. -
many of us bought it because of 25% cash back
-
i believe forum on this people probably care more about laptop than a watch
-
Solid hardware, nice aesthetics, little bit of a wow factor... yeah, I can see the appeal, even at such a high price point. Not even remotely "worth it" to most people bang-for-buck-wise, but this notebook wasn't designed for that particular sort of buyer.
For me, the 3.5 kg (~7.8 lb) curb weight with the slice battery on the 15" machine was the put-off, along with the apparently questionable touchpad. -
Envy 15 is:
i7
ati 4830
15" 1080p screen
upto 16gb ram
about 5 lbs
personally i could not find one, but not sure whats offered in other countries.
The Envy lacks a lot, but then for what it is i could not find anything from HP thats comparable. There are units from other manufactures now, but the price was more (once you include discounts)
The Envy is a niche market, its price is the premium you pay for wanting a specific type of product.

The Envy line of notebooks really does not have much to do with having additional functional benefits as it does with the HP brand having a higher-level of perception among consumers. It has to do with a little something called Market Segmentation.
There is a higher level of socioeconomic status associated with higher-priced luxury items regardless of whether they provide any sort of functional benefit over the standard model. In most cases, the only difference between the luxury and standard items is a change in its physical appearance. Since physical appearance is the first thing that people see (and usually the only thing), it alone can affect how people see a product, and therefore, affects the status associated with it. Even though HP does have certain configuration options exclusive to the Envy line, the distinction was clearly focused on the Envy’s technical design and physical appearance. This alone changes its perception among consumers and is enough appeal to those who can afford it. In this case, with the Envy line of notebooks, it is more of a psychological appeal to the more well-to-do individuals than a functional appeal to the more technologically-savvy crowd.
The other reason for having the Envy line is to increase the brand equity of the HP name. HP knows it won't sell anywhere near as many Envy models as the lesser lines, but having a very high-end product available for sale alone will increase overall consumer awareness and perception of the HP brand. This will carry over to the rest of the company's products under the HP name. In the end, HP hopes to achieve a stronger brand presence and higher level perception among consumers which will lead to a attracting more customers and increased sales across the board.
The other related part to that is that Dell is doing this with the Adamo series. Without a comparable product, the HP brand would fall behind that of Dell's in terms of consumer perception.
Anyway... sorry about the quick marketing lesson, but hopefully it'll help some folks understand why it costs so much more but don't quite understand why. -
While I am not the type that would buy an Envy over the DM3, the slice is an innovative feature.
-
-
I think the Envy, especially the 13, is sexy as heck. But man... it's just too expensive, especially with the DM3 right there looking almost as good.
Heck, I could get a DM3 SP9300 2.26ghz/Nvidia 105m, 160gb Intel X25m, 6gb DDR3.... and it'd still be cheaper than the bloody Envy. If the Envy was a $200-300 premium over the DM3, I would go for it based on looks alone.... but not with the bloody $800 premium or whatever it is. Heck man, it makes the Mac look cheap, which is saying a lot. -
-
Much slower CPU? What are you talking about? lol...
The SP9300 is ranked #42... the SL9600, the top CPU in the Envy 13 is ranked #51 (+$200 over the base $1,700). So actually, for all that money you're paying, you're getting a slower CPU.
Check it for yourself.
Regarding the GPU, the 105m is ranked at #105. The 4330 in the Envy 13? #102. Not sure what you're talking about regarding the sites ratings.
Again, check for yourself.
So. With the DM3, you get a faster CPU, basically the same performing GPU... throw in the 160GB SSD, 6gb of DDR3 memory... and you got yourself a machine that can stomp all over the Envy 13, for less money. Now, granted, the Envy does look nicer.... which is why I said I would be willing to pay a $200 premium for those looks... but not ~$800 dollars.
Check your facts my man.
I was talking about the Envy 13... which is why I was talking about the DM3 and not the DV6 or whatever.
In regards to the Envy 13/MBPro 13...
$1,700 for the Envy 13 gets you a 1.86ghz CPU, 4330, 3gb DDR3, 250gb HDD.
MBPro 13.... $1,200 gets you 2.26ghz, 9400m, 2gb DDR3, 160gb HDD>
Or for $1,500 (still cheaper) gets you 2.53ghz, 9400m, 4GB DDR3, 250GB HDD
See?
Now.. hopefully all your confusion is cleared up. -
It's form v function all over again.
-
I remind you of the OP's bizarre statement: "You can get dv series for less with same specs." That would be Not. -
-
With form comes preference. With preferences comes...
Who cares? -
-
Honestly if I could find a single battery for my HDX18 that would give me 3-4 hours on it, I'd be happy. But I get about 2 1/2 hours out of it. The Envy gets about 70 minutes. hehe That's crazy low battery time. -
I just got an Envy 13. I looked at the dm3 but it felt cheap to me, definitely not in the same ballpark as a MacBook Pro. The Envy build quality is very good, on par with the Apple. The 1600x900 screen is also very bright with excellent viewing angles and color reproduction, and the overall form factor is very thin and compact. If you are looking for pure bang-for-the-buck, the Envy isn't for you - you can find better CPUs and GPUs elsewhere. I personally found the combination of high-end materials and components, build quality, compact size, and excellent performance all deciding factors in my purchase. I had to spend more but I plan on keeping it for a few years, so it really isn't that much more considering the lifetime of the machine.
-
So I'm talking about the DM3/Envy 13 and then you came and started comparing the DM3 to the Envy 15? lol.. ok.
-
THe Envy 13 is too expensive because there are other alternatives as the processor is inferior.
As for the Envy 15, thats a better buy. -

"Whats so great about Envy?"
I've been wondering the same thing. -
The OS is subjective, so if you don't like OSX then foot the bill and get an envy.
-
Priced around 1500 dollar mark when its released. -
By the way, I have been playing AoE III all day long on the Envy 13 and it kept as cool as a cucumber. Very impressive cooling of this thing. Nice job HP. -
The envy 13" and 13" MBP are not even in the same league. I checked them both out side by side at futureshop a couple days ago. MBP build quality is slighty better all around, faster processor, faster GPU, $900 cheaper, backlit keyboard etc. The battery life Iam not sure as earlier in this post someone has said the envys is horrable, however on HPs website they state with extended battery up to 18hours, which if true Iam sure comes at a hefty additional price. Given the specs, build quality etc I think it should be priced around $1000 or so, not $2100
-
-
-
Now correct me if I'm wrong but the MBP 13 also comes with an internal optical drive eh? hehe. As for the price, it will be around 1k this time next year. The HDX series was priced at around 2k last year and was down to around 1k before they pulled it. -
14.6" x 10.3" x 1.3" - 1.6" - Dimensions
7.2 Pounds - Weight
This is not comparable to the Envy 15 at all. Sometimes people just don't get it, its like a broken record. -
-
some reasons why I bought the envy 15:
1) it is a powerful machine per the weight. I want portability, not a boat anchor.
2) if i wanted something very powerful, then I'd get a desktop instead.
3) who uses CDs these days? -
-
Envy 13 IMO is a ripoff. Sony Vaio Z and the MBP 13 inch give much better value. The Envy 13 does look the best out of the 3, but I personally think the Z and the MBP look swell also.
The Envy 15 can't really be a ripoff since there really aren't other laptops to compare it too. No other laptop has an i7 with in such a slim package along with a formidable graphics card. -
-
I just bought an Envy 15 to replace my 13" MacBook Pro. Why do you ask? Cause its a horrid gaming machine, while I like the unibody and I had more than a few 15" Aluminum MBPs, they stoof up very well to the rigors of travel and did not break my back.
I too had one of the older Asus G series gaming laptops and while a great performer, the weight pretty much drove me back to a mac. Before, nobody had too much in this space that was lightweight, sturdy, and had good performance except for the 15" Macs. So far the only thing I miss is the backlight keyboard. Performance wise plus the fact that this thing can go up to 16GB of RAM its much better then the same 15" Unibody that I would have bought for the same price.
Whats so great about Envy?
