I just wanted to get a sense of the average life of hp pcs. Especially the dv6. Do you guys think it will last me a good 3-4 years. The things im worried about are the keyboard keys falling off, the touchpad clickers, and the hinges. Do you think these can last for that long, or am I just asking for too much from a low-mid range laptop.

Also I was wondering if there is something wrong with my battery. It seems to run out of charge pretty fast. I should probably monitor it.

I use battery bar pro, and at 65 percent it says i have only 3 hours and 43 seconds remaining. I thought the 9 cell would give me more impressive battery life than that. (O i have it on powersaver too) And my brightness is set to 30 percent.

The one I had before I returned it was pretty solid. The hinges were firm and there were no glaring build quality issues (aside from some keyboard flex) so it should be able to last you 3-4 years. The keyboard is easily replaceable so it it does start to go bad in a couple years (not saying it will) you can just get another.

    3hrs and 43 minutes you mean? So do the math 223 mins / .65 ~ 5.7 hours.

A couple things to consider, 6-cell gets about four hours on battery, 9-cell 50% bigger so about 6 hours. Secondly, BatteryBar isn't accurate until you do a couple discharge cycles. Lastly, you still need to consider some energy saving techniques, lower LCD brightness, set Wi-fi to medium power savings (I find max power savings reduces performance), PCI Express Link Power State to maximum power savings.

It'll depend on how well you take care of your computer, as I have a dv5000 that is still running and that's around 5 years on August and has been past down to my mom and still uses it, battery might be the one that won't really last all those years until maintained. I also had a dv4-1114nr almost 3 years and still works sold it to a friend and used the money to help get the dv6tqe.

Usually from what I've seen on battery bar is that after it finds the amount, it will go down faster than it goes up, it will take a while to go up to the amount it should be. You might want to try Battery Care at BatteryCare
It has mostly been a bit more accurate and will show you how long it will be depending on what you are doing.

This has been my experiences with HP.

Yeah, don't expect more than 3 years of decent battery life from your battery, even if you don't use it on battery much. Just the nature of the beast. Also BatteryCare is a good alternative and completely free (although BatteryBar frequently sells it at whatever price you want to give from $1 on up to unlock all features). The one benefit of BatteryBar that I like is the icon on the taskbar showing life remaining and not hidden in the system tray.

I don't understand why people expect their batteries to have some kind of alien technology in them. 6-7 hours out of one charge seems pretty good to me.

I remember a couple years back where HP offered a special type of batteries which were supposed to have at least 80% charge in 3 years... What happened to those?

I agree. Hell - I am thrilled just to get four hours out of mine.

Perhaps users believe that portable battery technology has been on pace with the hardware? I dunno... but I do know that today's portable devices definitely do more.

I don't think Moore's law applies to battery capacity sadly.
