Just wondering how long XP will still be available from HP when vista starts to ship.

I am on the verge of buying right now and definitely want XP media center, not vista, but would like a few weeks more to save up for the model I want.

What does everybody here think about the availability of XP after vista ships?
Still available? or not so much?

    thanks

What model are you considering? The business line will continue to offer XP for quite awhile. The consumer line will shift much more rapidly, although I would expect the CTO models to offer both for a few months at least.

Out of curiosity, why the Vista hate? I have a dv2000 and use Vista pretty much exclusively. If your system has the specs, it blows XP away. (Full disclosure: I was a beta tester and am biased toward Vista.. but if you haven't used it yet (the final) then you don't know what you're missing.)

Honestly, I encourage you to try out Vista. In fact, I recommend you to get the laptops when Vista preinstalled on them.

I too was a beta tester for Vista, and now, I am certainly more biased than jadedraverla because I work for the company in Redmond. I don't think I would ever want to go back to Xp. It is just much more efficient to work with Vista. I can search for my files, emails without the hassle of waiting. Aero is very pleasing to my eyes too ;)

On the side note, I have over 1.5 gig of emails from Outlook Express ported to Windows Mail already. It would be a hassle for me to go back to Xp (Microsoft provides no streamline way to automate the transition back to Outlook Express, but you can certainly do it manually).

jadedraverla, Are you doing Longhorn server beta testing?

I too am testing/working on Vista on all three of my computers, and I love it.

It's very fast for me, and I haven't had any problems.

I suggest to the OP, you at least try out Vista. The final version is pretty good, and like I said, I haven't had any problems with it.

And Aero is quite nice on the eyes, I agree.

    ;)

Well, not hate really, I just don't want it.

1st, I DO want media center and don't want to have to get the 5th or 6th version of vista for it. Pretty sure that it would be an upgrade on the CTO models.
2nd, I have used it (vista) and I really prefer a simple XP install.
Just simpler for me to use.

Now the wife on the other hand, she straight hated it.
I'm sure she would get used to it, but what makes life easier for me is what I'm looking at right now.
    looking at the dv9000t BTW.

I guess I'll try to scrape some $$ together sooner rather than later.

    thanks for the replies

No, between working full time, being a full time student, and trying to maintain a life, betatesting server OS's doesn't really work out well for me. Desktop OS's, Office, Media Player, IE, etc. I'm always down for testing, but servers are just too time consuming. That said, I was thinking of building myself a little server... if I'm able to get into the (reportedly highly restricted) Windows Home Server beta, I'll probably build one. That is exactly what I've been waiting for before setting up a true home server. BTW, if you work for Microsoft doesn't that make you more than just a beta-tester? I've never heard a MS employee refer to himself as one before.

Also, if Microsoft has extra Vista licenses lying around that they want to give to Vista evangelists, I am always a grateful recipient (between Vista and Office for all my and my family's computers, my Best Buy bill on 1/30 is going to be outrageous).

    Quick reply:

Your second reason is obviously valid, but don't worry about reason 1. If you get XP MCE, you'll get the upgrade to Vista Home Premium (which has MCE). If you wait and just get Vista Home Premium, it should be the same price. Since it definitely sounds like you want XP, I would just say go ahead and fill out the online form for your free upgrade. Sometime down the road I can almost guaruntee you'll want Vista, and at least that way you have it (and for free).

    Exactly what I had planned.
I ordered it now with xp MCE and will do the free upgrade to vista home premium so if I don't like/want vista I can always go back to xp.

Best of both worlds...well, except for the whole upgrading MS OS's is usually a no no. I hope the upgrade they send can really be done as a fresh install. Time will tell.

Well, yes, if you want to be very specific about the terms; I was beta testing before I joined, and I am "dogfooding" after I joined.

Awhile back, you mentioned about using your SD card for superfetch. I tried that, and I have to say, it is actually slowing down the system. In fact, it got so bad that the 1Gb SD card is now dead after two days of usage. It is made by Patiot. Luckily, NewEgg is willing to replace, and I don't think I will use the replacement for superfetch again

My guess is they'll have it available at least until they get a feeling for the general acceptance of Vista, figure maybe the end of the year. Don't want to be caught with their pants down if Joe Q isn't impressed.

It is pretty nice though and I haven't run across any major problems. In any case, not sure I'd want to shell out 3-4 bills for Ultimate, as good as it is.

Dogfooding... now you sound like a MS employee! That's always been one of my favorite microsoft-isms. As for your ReadyBoost problem, it sounds like a bad SD card to me. Obviously, it shouldn't die and it shouldn't slow down the system. A couple of tips though. Once you get one that works, reformat as FAT32 as opposed to regular FAT. In my informal testing, that sped up a few things where I noticed ReadyBoost being used. I never got a slowdown, but formatted as FAT I really didn't get a boost either. On my machine with 2 GB RAM and 2 GB SD card (SanDisk, by the way), I notice it gets used most for things like displaying folder contents and icons. Windows Explorer shows the contents of foldes I go to fairly often instantaneously, without having to actually get the file information off of the disk. It's a minor thing, but nice none the less. Other than that, ReadyBoost doesn't make a huge difference for me. A few applications boot a couple of seconds faster and the system boots a couple of seconds faster, but that's about it. On another system I have that only has 1 GB of RAM, the difference is more noticeable.
