So I had to ship my girlfriends's pc to geek squad cause the hard drive and motherboard went out. It came back w/o an OS. So where could I find the software at?

You'll have to order one from a vendor online. There are still several sites out there that sell it. If it came with the system you should be able to order a recovery set from HP.

I've looked everywhere on Microsoft, Newegg Bestbuy and Circuit City. I can't find the freaking thing. Why wouldn't BestBuy load it. The laptop is under warranty.

In all honesty I would call the service center and complain to Best Buy. The should have reloaded it. If not call HP and rip them a new one. They should at least send you a recovery set of XP or even offer you a upgrade for free. If not, here's a few site to choose. But if it were me i'd be getting in Best Buy and HP about it.

I'm not sure if HP will send you a recovery dvd set for free, they will most likely charge you, seeing as it is an option when buying the laptop and you're supposed to make the recovery dvd when you first get the laptop.
I would ask people you know if they have a copy, even if you work somewhere that would have a copy on hand and see if you can borrow the disc, it shouldn't matter where you are getting it from as long as you use your XP key on the bottom of the computer, and the versions match. Also I believe to use the key from the laptop it needs to be a generic OEM version of windows, at least that's what I needed when I reinstalled XP (borrowed a friend's disc who builds his own PC's), and you'll aslo need to slipstream SATA drivers as well; its all detailed here

They shouldn't give him any grief about it, the recovery tool was bugged forever and they were sending them out no charge. My Mother-in-Law of all people called them and after two minutes of talking to the CS agent they sent it right out. She had it in her hands 5 days later.

Just let them know you could never make a set because it would error out and they shouldn't give a problem. If they do it's cheaper to get a set from them than it is to buy it outright. Or if you know someone else that has a XP cd set you can try theirs, just make sure you use the code on the bottom of your machine.

Whats funny is that on the receipt it says that, "Os should be installed when computer is at store." I mean i'm not an english major, but doesn't that mean that Xp should've been installed at the store.

If XP was on it when you took it in, XP should be on it when they give it back.

That's my thought on it as well. I'd take it back to them and tell them to put a OS back on it. Best Buy techs are not what I would call the best or brightest. Take it back and ask to speak to their lead tech. Tell them when it came in it had a OS and you want it back on. If that doesn't work tell them you want to speak with the store manager. Explain the situation to him. If he acts like a butt, threaten to call Best Buy's corp office and HP as well. These guys shouldn't really give you a problem about it either.

OK well I got to install the OS, but I'm afraid they forgot to reattach the wireless card or they forgot to include it in the laptop again. I have installed all of the drivers for the wireless and wired cards. What else is there to do? Something called a network controller keeps coming up under "Other Devices". Is this the network card?
