The options are adjusted based on current inventory levels. You'd save yourself $200 by buying aftermarket ram anyway.........

I understand, as you don't want to be concerned with compatibility and troubleshooting of the non-factory items. However for me, i've had little cause for concern. When I bought my newest laptop a few weeks ago, I ordered it with the smallest hard drive and minimum memory. When it arrived, I swapped in the new aftermarket parts I bought and everything has been fine.

Granted if the unit had to go to HP for warranty work, I'd have to put the original parts back in. Luckily that has not happened yet on any of my machines.............

well that is up to you, HP and others rely on ppl like you who dont want to try their best to save themselves money. you could easily check this site or even ask ppl here what memory they've upgraded and used and save yourself alot of wasted cash. there are also many manufacturers whose sites can tell you which RAM is compatible with your system.

For RAM, HP should not void you warranty if you change or upgrade it. the same should be applied to the hard drive but you find some HP reps telling you that it will but that is probably due to ignorance or the fact that they want you to buy their overpriced upgrades rather than a DIY that saves you a bundle.

The factory RAM in all HP notebooks is Nanya brand.

I'm using the Crucial 4GB kit in my dv9500t. I had memtest86 running for 10 hours straight with 0 errors. Crucial makes very stable high-quality memory.

Not necessarily. I have a Micron on one, a Nanya on another, and Samsung too. It depends on what they can source at any given production run.

Almost all RAM is the same. You will save between $200 and $400 by getting the RAM from somewhere else. The only difference is "if it works" or "if not". There is no difference in quality or anything else in RAM. You can test if your new RAM works by using memtest86+. You need to look for "laptop RAM" and "PC5300". If it meets those 2 criteria, it will work fine.

If you want to skip that step, send me the $200 and I'll do it for you.

Also, you cannot void your warranty by adding other RAM. It's the law in the USA (unless that RAM very obviously caused the problem).

Also, most memory vendors will have a page on their site to select the right kind of RAM for your system, so that should take any guesswork out as well.

I work with HP servers regularly, and I've seen them use a lot of different companies for RAM. They're interested in price and specifications more that name brand -- after all it is supposed to be "HP" RAM.

And if it doesn't work, you can always return the RAM and get a different kind. But with a trivial amount of checking you should be able to confirm the part is compatible ahead of time.

You usually get a lifetime warranty on aftermarket RAM, whereas RAM you purchase through HP is only warrantied for a year (unless you get that extended). It costs hundreds less, and it's simple to swap out, and it doesn't void your warranty. There is absolutely no reason to go with an official HP upgrade in this case unless you are under some kind of corporate protocol requiring you to get all OEM parts.

helio: please try to exercise some restraint. You already posted this question to another thread, and there's no need to post it twice. No one answered you here because they probably saw your other post.
