I have a dv6113us and just recently upgraded to vista.

When i had xp installed, the most heated part of my notebook is the left palm rest which is above the HDD. But now, the most heated part is directly at the touchpad, which is above my ram. So I'm assuming that the heat that I'm feeling is coming from the ram. The notebook comes with 1gb of ram and I know that vista eats a huge chunk of that so I am going to upgrade my ram to 2gb. Will this help my overheating problem or will it make it worse? I assume that having more ram capacity will lower the heat output.

Vista will constantly access RAM to make sure it's filled up with pre-cached data. That could be a possible reason why.

so upgrading my ram should help with the overheating problem right?

Well, I mean, I don't know if it's going to be a direct solution. There could be other things at play too. Wifi card is right next to memory so that could be a factor, also where you are using your laptop, if it's properly being ventilated, etc...

well, i always had my notebook at the same place and when I had xp, it wasn't this bad. When i had xp, my wifi is always on but it doesn't seem to heat up there. After about half an hour or so, I would some heat over the HDD area. Now, after about 20 mins on vista, the area around my touchpad becomes very hot.

my ram upgrade will be delivered on tuesday, I'll install it and see what happens. There's not much I can do about it now.

Vista does focus more on RAM access than HDD access, so that could be the factor.

However, my dv9000t heads up over the left palmrest like yours with XP did :-/ (especially so when it's plugged in, and more heat comes out in the little curved groove right along the keyboard).

Nothing dangerously hot, though, but still enough to tell, especially when typing.

yeah, eventhough mine heats up alot, it only crashed due to heat about once or twice within the first week of use. It hasn't crashed since, even with vista.

so, i'll try giving the notebook some more ram and see what happens. I believe it should help.
