Ok, so i just bought a HP dv2125nr laptop. I made backup dvds, then formated the drive. I removed the recovery partition. The crappy videos and other media. The drivers directory. All in all i have 7 gbs taken on my laptop. I go into explorer, highlight all files, including system and hidden... it comes to about 3-4gb. Where is that extra 3-4 gbs of space being taken up?

Virtual RAM, the system cache, and the space reserved on the HDD for when you hibernate...those usually don't show up in the properties of a drive.

Actual formatted capacity is lower than the advertised capacity. So say you have a 100GB HD, You would have ~95GB of actual usable space. Its mainly a marketing gimmick, but does work out to be easier having nice even numbers to look for.

Also, don't forget the QuickPlay Partition. There's a GB right there.
