The biggest bottleneck in my 6910p currently is the hdd. Which one is currently the most acceptable model?

Also, someone pointed out that the driveguard protection has something to do with the drive manufacturer. Is this true?

    Thanks.

I am not sure exactly what you mean by "most acceptable model".

Seagate and Hitachi make the best notebook hard drives.

I believe Hitachi and Seagate are the two most common manufacturers of 7200rpm notebook HDDs

As for driveguard or generic notebook drive protection, I don't think it has to do with any built-in features of drive itself. Most likely, there's an on board accelerometer somewhere in the laptop that can detect sudden movements and shutdown the harddrive. Usually, that would only require the installation of a driver and software on the new harddrive and you will be good to go.

I really like my 7k200. About the protection there's a metal drive guard and also an accelerometer. Neither of these are only for the stock drive. The metal plate attaches to your HD and the accelerometer is in the laptop itself and uses software.

Right now Hitachi has the fastest and largest 7200RPM availible, the 7k200 200GB. The things are expensive though.

I don't think you can go wrong with either Hitachi or Seagate. My dv9500 replacement had the seagate and the original had the Hitachi. I swapped the hitachi to the replacement because it had 16mb cache vs. 8mb cache. If the seagate only comes in 8mb cache get the hitachi otherwise get the best value.
