For the HDX, I was planning to get the T7700, but HP just recently added the T7800 and the X7900.

My understanding of the numbering terminology from Intel is this: if the CPU is numbered T7x00, where "x" is an odd number--i.e. T7300, T7500, T7700--then the mobo is the new Santa Rosa platform. But if "x" is an even number--i.e. T7200, T7400, T7600--then the mobo is the previous, non-Santa Rosa platform.

Now I see a T7800. Is that Santa Rosa, or the older platform?

More to my point of this post, is it worth my money to get the X7900? I think I read somewhere that even Intel said the 7900 only increases performance about 8% over the T7700--the main advantage is that it can be overclocked.

Up to now, I haven't been a gamer. That may change if I do indeed spring for the HDX. But the main use of the HDX for me will be entertainment and maybe video editing. Video editing esp benefits from the fastest CPU available. But is it worth the $625 extra it would cost to go from the T7700 to the X7900? Esp if I probably won't overclock?

So, should I stick w/the T7700 as originally planned, or go for the X7900? Opinions? Pros and Cons? Thanks!

I was in a similar situation you are in. I was debating whether or not to upgrade from the t7500 (2.2Ghz) to the t7700 (2.4Ghz). For me I chose to go with the t7700 because it was only $100 more and I had a coupon that made it the same price anyway. I'll tell you this right now, you won't notice a difference between the t7700 and the t7900. If it was only small amount to upgrade to the t7900 I would say go for it, but $625 is definitely not worth it, you won't notice a speed increase and the very little increase that it does give doesn't justify $625.
