    Hello,
Still trying to decide on the laptop that I am getting for christmas and it's getting very close so I really need to make a decision...
I checked the Staples website this morning and the laptop that I was planning on getting (DV6120ca) is still $1200 CAD (about $1040 USD), but the DV6140ca, which is a step up is on sale this week and is now $1250CAD (about $1084 USD). So is it worth the extra money to upgrade? The 6140 had an AMD processor and I don't know if that is a reason to go or not go with it. Here are the specs for the two computers:

    HP Pavilion DV6120ca
    -1.73 GHz Intel® Centrino® Duo mobile technology featuring Intel® Core™ Duo processor T2250 (2MB L2 cache) -1.0GB DDR2 SDRAM, expandable to 2GB
    -120GB 5400RPM SATA Hard Drive
-LightScribe SuperMulti 8x DVD±RW with Double Layer Support
-Intel Graphics Media Accelerator 950 with up to 128MB Shared video RAM
    -15.4” WXGA High-Definition BrightView Widescreen (1280 x 800) LCD
    -Intel® PRO/Wireless 3945ABG LAN
    -Integrated 10/100BASE-T Ethernet LAN (RJ-45)
    -High speed 56k modem
-External Ports: 5-in-1 integrated Digital Media Reader for Secure Digital cards, MultiMedia cards, Memory Stick, Memory Stick Pro, or xD Picture cards; 3 USB 2.0; 2 Headphone out - 1 with SPDIF Digital Audio and 1 stereo; 1 microphone-in; 1 VGA (15-pin); 1 TV-Out (S-video); 1 RJ-11 (modem); 1 RJ -45 (LAN); 1 notebook expansion port; 1 IEEE 1394 Firewire (4-pin); 1 Consumer IR
-HP Mobile Remote Control (Express Card Version) and Mobile Stereo Earbud Headphones Included
-Microsoft Windows® XP Media Center Edition, English

    HP Pavilion DV6140ca
    -1.8GHz AMD Turion™ 64 X2 Dual-Core Mobile Technology TL-56 (2 x 512KB L2 Cache)
    -2GB DDR2 SDRAM
    -120GB 5400RPM SATA Hard Drive
-LightScribe SuperMulti 8X DVD±RW with Double Layer Support
    -15.4” WXGA High-Definition BrightView Widescreen (1280 x 800) Display
-NVIDIA GeForce Go 6150 graphics, with up to 128MB Shared RAM
    -802.11b/g WLAN
    -Integrated 10/100BASE-T Ethernet LAN
    -High speed 56k modem
-HP Pavilion WebCam with Integrated Microphone
-Ports: 5-in-1 integrated Digital Media Reader for Secure Digital cards, MultiMedia cards, Memory Stick, Memory Stick Pro, or xD Picture cards; 3 USB 2.0; 2 Headphone out -- 1 with SPDIF Digital Audio and 1 stereo; 1 microphone-in; 1 VGA (15-pin); 1 TV-Out (S-video); 1 RJ-11 (modem); 1 RJ-45 (LAN); 1 notebook expansion port; 1 IEEE 1394 Firewire (4-pin); 1 Consumer IR

-Windows® XP Media Center Edition (Windows Vista Premium Ready), English
-Comes with a free all-in-one printer because it is on sale

Any advice would be great.. Thanks :)

I suggest going for the AMD version. It has alot more RAM than the Intel and also has a slightly better graphics card. Neither of the graphics card a amazing, but the the 6150 can at least play older less demanding games beter than the GMA 950. How much do the notebooks cost?

The prices are very similar, so I would just go with the AMD HP.

At that price the dv6140ca, the performance of the processors are about equal. The Go 6150 & the 2GB RAM is more benefitial. For $50 more the 6140ca is a better buy than the 6120ca.

Ditto the above AMD recommendations. If you eventually upgrade to Vista you'll very much want that 2GB RAM and better GPU, plus you'll have the option of running 64-bit Vista while the Core Duo machine can't.

Yes, I would also recommend getting the AMD version with it being only a bit more expensive having twice as much ram and a better video card. Although I think it will have less battery life and run a bit hotter though but overall is worth it.
