So I've pretty much decided on the HP dv2500t. In customizing it in the HP shopping site, I came across several different service options. Obviously I don't want to spend more than what's necessary, but I also don't want to pay later for being cheap now.

Thoughts? Here's what I'm being offered (with my 6% educational discount):

Choice A: no additional charge for standard 1-year

Choice B:1-year HP Accidental Damage Protection with Express Repair extended service plan
Covers any damage caused by spills, drops, falls, collisions, electrical surges, or any other accident.

    app price
    +$94.99

Choice C: 2-year HP Express Repair extended service plan
Lock in up to two years of award-winning coverage with Express Repair

    app price
    +$132.99

Choice D: 2-year HP Accidental Damage Protection with Express Repair extended service plan
Accidental Damage Protection covers any damage caused by spills, drops, falls, collisions, electrical surges, or any other accident.

    app price
    +$237.49

Choice E: 3-year Total One Solution
Don't take chances. Protect your PC and peripherals with 24x7 toll-free support.

    app price
    +$275.49

Choice F: 4-Year HP Total Care Extended Service Plan with Express Repair for HP Pavilion and Compaq Presario Notebook PCs
Lock in up to four years of award-winning coverage with Express Repair.

    app price
    +$313.49

Choice G: 3-year HP Accidental Damage Protection with Express Repair extended service plan
Lock in up to three years of award-winning coverage with Accidental Damage Protection

    app price
    +$332.49

    Any input greatly appreciated!

choice A. the chance is that your computer won't break in 2 years time, and by that time, it's time for you to move on to a new notebook.
I have 5 year old HP OmniBook, never breaks down. It depends on how you treat your laptop. If you treat it badly or making it work so hard 24/7, then I'll go with the 3 year warranty

thanks for the feedback w_tanoto! i've never had an hp before and wanted to get some informed info.

i have had a toshiba satellite A75 for the last 4 years. i had to take it to a licensed toshiba repair place in the city for a broken backlight right before the original warranty was up. while i was there, i bought a 2-year extension for about $150. it was a good move since the hardware really started falling apart about a year after - i got 3 free repairs.

i suppose i can always do that again - buy additional coverage later if it seems to need it.

I would get the basic free 1 year warranty, and then if you notice troubles toward the end of the first year, upgrade then. HP will send you an email before the year is up reminding you to get an extended warranty.

yes, they sent me an e-mail as well, and offering to extend the warranty. I think it was about GB£100 for 1-2 years. I suggest if your laptop is not strong enough or started to broke down, then you'll take their offer to extend the warranty. It's hell a lot cheaper than when you pay for one time service, which is about £270
