I'd really like the solid construction and business design of the HP business notebooks, but the higher contrast of the glossy screens is so much preferrable for me for watching movies and gaming.

Okay, so it must be the ones with Bright view. Got it. Problem is, it's not an option at WXGA on any business class notebook with discrete graphics memory.

The nc8430 doesn't offer brightview at any resolution. So far, the only ones that offer it for a widescreen are the integrated video 15.4" notebooks and the high end 17" but I want a standard HD resolution like 1280x820 not 1650x1050.

The (only) widescreen resolutions available (for any/all models of laptops):

    1280 x 800
    1440 x 900
    1680 x 1050
    1920 x 1200

These are all 16:10 aspects, and I think you will be hard pressed to find a 16:9.

Also, almost all the business class notebooks have matte screens because they are easier to use in office environments.

Amen to that! I ordered a Dell for my cousin and it had a glossy screen. I couldn't see the thing in my office with the lights on without having to move my head around the reflections. My nw9440 has a matte finish and is very much preferred! I even love the ambient light sensor that auto adjusts the brightness level.

I wouldn't rule out a matte finish even for gaming or watching DVDs. The matte is nothing to scoff at in the looks department, and its benefits outweigh the little lost on perceived sharpness or contrast.

I understand why they're matte. I happen to be looking for a business notebook for home use. I like the all black look and sturdy feel but want to watch movies and game a little in addition to work.

I understand the ratio part now. I thought I had read that 720P was 1280x820, but it's obviously 1280x720....hence the 720. That actually helps make my decision much easier.

Well, even the matte screens are good there...I have one and love it more than the glossy screens (darker details were always muddy for me).

Glossy screens are (in my opinion) the biggest mistake recently made by the computer industry. I've had 4 laptops in the last few years, and I'm glad I've "reverted" back to the matte screens.

    Hi Hyperluminous,
I have a gloss screen and I really like it. I don't know which of the HP business models have the gloss screen but I believe it is the Brightview option.

I re-read your post, and realized you already had the first part figured out, but I already typed it so here it is for others:

    HP business-class notebooks with Brightview
    nx7300 and nx7400 - both 15.4" 1280x800
    nx6325 - 15" 1024x768
    nx9420 and nx9440 - 17" 1680x1050

That's it from what I can see... and yeah, neither the nx7300 or nx7400 have discrete graphics options... or really any options to speak of.

Personally, I wouldn't be so scared off by HP's consumer line. The dv6000 and dv2000 series are excellent notebooks, and VERY sturdy for consumer-grade notebooks. They may or may not work for you, since you want a "business" look, but they perform quite well.
