The dv5t and dv6t; which is better?
I would have both with vista 64, 4gb RAM, 400 GB hard drive, 2.4 Ghtz intell processor. The only real difference is the graphics card the 9600 and 9200. Is there a big difference between the two?
For college which would be better? Just typical college stuff... email, internet, some movies, chatting with friends, home work etc.
I was thinking about the dv6t since it's perfect 16:9 ratio for watching movies.
But how are the other aspects of the dv6t?
Does that .6 inches in scren size make a big difference?

The screen's aspect ratio is just a matter of personal preference.

Regarding the graphics card, if it is cheaper and you are quite sure that you will not be gaming on your laptop, you could get the dv6t.

However, I would recommend you look into other computers.

Does battery life matter to you? Computers with integrated graphics should tend to have better battery life. Also, will the glossy screen be an issue with you when you are doing homework?

What do you mean glossy screen? Is that bad?
What other computers do you recommend me look into?

Glossy screen are the screens which are 'enhanced for colour', basically if you are in room with strong lighting, you can sometimes see your own face reflected in the screen. (well, it's not really that bad, but like I said before, it's a personal preference)

The computer depends on your budget.

For me personally, I would look into a store and see if there are any computers that I like the feel of and then look online/elsewhere for a cheaper price.

Unless you plan on buying a DV5T in a store, instead of HP.com, it is irrelevant. The DV5T is no longer offered on the website.

The question of whether a dv5t is better than a dv6t comes down to preference.

First, there is a HUGE difference between a 9200m GS and a 9600m GT when it comes to playing games, BUT if you only want to watch movies you will not notice a difference.

From your comments you are not a gamer so a dv6t with the 9200GS would work fine for you at college.

The only issue is size and/or battery life. Do you plan to carry this to class? if so I might suggest looking at something smaller? maybe a dv4(z or t) or even the new dv3z (still 6:9 ratio). The screens will be smaller but so is the size and with that a greater battery life. Just a suggestion.

I own a dv5t with a 9600m GT and love it so far but I don't have to move it anywhere. I use a 14" laptop for work that is great for carrying around.

    Just my suggestion.

The only game I can think of playing are simple computer games like chess. The only 'real major' game that I might play is Age of Empires, Flight Simulator X, Comman and Conquer General Zero Hour, Red Alert 3.
So for those games would the 9200 be ok or should I go for the 9600? I heard that FSX realy slows down the FPS so what do you think?

The difference between a 9200M GT and a 9600M GT is HUGE. I know Red Alert 3 runs fine on a 8400M GT with mostly low settings. A 9200 probably could not handle RA3. If you ever plan on getting Command and Conquer 3 it most definitely will NOT run on a 9200. Have you considered the HDX16? Still has your 16:9 ratio, and the 9600M GT Bit more pricey though.

I personally ended up getting a dv7 for three reasons:
    1. 9600M GT
    2. dual hard drives
    3. better cooling

I would have bought a HDX16, but I had a price limit and I really wanted a few features (bluray, 4GB ram, bluetooth) that went a bit beyond my limit. I probably could have gotten one, but ultimately I really liked the idea of dual hard drives and the 8 cell battery of the dv7, so I got one.

Also, you said you'd be doing homework, right? You can get a rather nice student discount from HP.

what a prudent consumer you are. i would go go for a dv5t, personally. you will get better screen resolution, a better graphics card, and a lighter machine. i'm assuming those are pros rather than cons for you.

Is there a big difference between viewing DVD's on the dv5t and dv6t? I think the dv6t has the designed aspect ratio of dvd's.
