Hi guys.....
I've been checking (and hoping) to find a laptop with built-in serial port on HP's website but couldn't find any (with intel cpu).
Are there any current or past (last year) models with serial port at 15".
Thanks!
-
Best bet is get a dock , that's how I run outdated connections , HP 8510 with a advanced dock .
-
if u can't find serial port with any models u like .
u can easly buy USB to Serial Cable
like this one

Thanks for your replies!
Didn't realise about the dock, I will check that out..thanks!
Thanks for the suggestion about the adaptor but they are unreliable as the port will be used many times a day. -
I checked out the dock but it's quite expensive at $300. Thanks again for the suggestion.
-
I really recommend to check prices in used docks. The advanced dock seems to sell in ebay for ~45USD. I paid my own 45 euros, while the new Advanced Dock is closer to 300 euros in here.

ok, wow, that's a big difference. Thanks, I'll check it out

I use a usb/serial adapter for many many hours each day (hooked up as a terminal to Cisco routers) without problem.
Understand that in a dock, your 'serial port' will likely be an emulated port via USB anyway. -
My man, use the adapter Wigster posted... I'm sure you can find them for less than a bucket of chicken. Save yourself the trouble....
-
trouble ? the dock has so many uses , has a dvd/hd bay , express card port 6 usb ports , GB lan port , charges the laptop , elevates it so it stays cooler , on mine the express port is used for a tv card , keeps the heat away from the laptop also run an extra monitor off it . And I don't have to connect wires all the time , just slap the laptop on the dock .
-
I too have expresscard DVB-t and fullhd monitor (and a backup drive in the expansion bay adapter)
Add a scanner and printer too, that's a lot of cables not needed to attach everytime I need them
Besides that works on my both laptops.
Biggest drawback is that now I want all my future laptops to have one tooThat's expensive.
I just wish HP doesn't change the dock port in the future models.

I own the HP Quickdock so you don't have to convince me.
But if all he wants is a serial port, then he should just get the converter and save himself a boatload of money. He would most definitely be saving himself trouble and money. Why buy an entire dock if all you want is a serial port?
Now, if he wants a dock with a serial port, or liked the idea of a dock, that's a different story. But if all he's after is a serial port, then he should just opt for the converter. -
That depends what he is going to run with the serial port. Depending on where you read the specs, serial port is supposed to offer at least 3 volts and at maximum 12-15 volts, yet USB offers only 5 volts max.
Usually when people start asking for built-in serial ports, it means they have already gone thru 5-10 usb adapters with bad success. -
Yeah, some old software requires a hardware serial port in the BIOS, this is how some older programs accessed serial, directly through BIOS calls (I know because I have written some ages ago).
I have recently found that there is a mobile port replicator for HP business laptops. It is a wedge that clips on to the bottom like the travel battery. In fact you can use the small travel battery and the replicator at the same time. It has serial parallel and a couple of USB ports. It uses the docking connetor.
The part number is AK155AA or 463233-001 it weighs 0.5kg so it makes the laptop a little less portable, but at least it is a mobile option!
Before this I was stuck with the nc6320, since that was the last HP to have both a true serial and parallel port onboard. -
-
Thanks , never knew they had a portable dock ! And it is not expensive , $59 at Hp ,
I just picked one up for $24 , new on flea bay .
Thanks ! -
The software I currently use works only exclusively with a BIOS parallel port, and it works perfectly on the nc6320. This is why I have 2 nc6320's, but no need now with the mobile dock, so eBay here they come!.
Which models have serial port?
