The zv5000z is equal or better in all respects (better CPU, dedicated memory video instead of slow shared memory) except for weight (8.5 pounds with the 12 cell) and battery life (3-4 hours in my experience). With 64-bit WinXP expected to be released to manufacturing at the end of March and your "3 to 4 years" requirement, that tips the scales heavily towards the AMD64 machine.

Consider the 1680x1050 res screen. It's not BrightView, but I like the extra pixels. Not everyone can read Windows Normal Fonts at that pixel density though.

My mistake the ZV5000Z has the AMD Athlon(TM) 64 3000+ 1.80 GHz processor not the Intel and has 8 cell not 12 cell battery.

You say the zv5000z has 3-4hrs battery life what would the dv1000 be? What would be the difference between haveinfg the 6 cell vs the 12 cell? 3-4 year is flexible just did not to have to get another one after short time.64-bit WinXp? i thought Brightview was recommend when viewing DVD's?

The DV1000 with a 12-cell... probably a bit under twice the battery life of the zv5000z. You could get away with the 6-cell.

BrightView is good for DVDs, not all that useful for text IMHO. I like the higher res for HDTV (http://www.usbhdtv.com). If you want the larger Normal Fonts display you'll get on a standard 1280x800 res display, yes, get BrightView.

You'll get an additional performance boost from 64-bit WinXP on AMD 64-bit CPUs like the Athlon 64's (and not on Intel's kludgy clone of AMD's x86-64 that isn't available for notebooks anyhow). The 4GB limit of 32-bit CPUs like the Pentium-M and P4 is starting to become a problem (even when people have far less than 4GB of physical RAM), so the transition to 64-bit OS's is beginning and will be well underway by next year. 64-bit WinXP is backwards compatible with current 32-bit software of course. Servers are already going 64-bit in a major way, anyone still buying Intel Xeon servers instead of AMD Opterons is just not paying attention.

Anyhow, if you do annual hardware upgrades this might not be that big a deal, but if you want your notebook to last several years then having 64-bit capability is a Very Good Idea.

Personally, I had no trouble reading fonts with a BrightView screen. If you want your notebook to last 3-4 years, definately get the ZV5000Z.

I hate to complicate the issue but this week Office Depot is offering $280 total rebate on the configure to order (CTO) Compaq Presario R3000z that can be identically configured to the HP zv5000z. Having just configured and setup a R3000z for a friend and owning a zv5000z myself I could see no major differences between the two units.

I would like to know if anyone has other opinions.

Personally I think the construction between the HP and Compact are still different. I would still go with the HP.

Do they preform the same? Reliability? How does the sizes compare?
The last Presario I had, which was second hand, always had to be plugged in or battery use only 1hr or so. Maybe it bad battery?

I only found the one $30.00 mail-in rebate at the Office Depot website.Where's the others? Also it doesn't seem to let you customize it either here?

    Comparison

    Processor:Intel Pentium 4 2.8A GHZ vs HP the AMD Athlon 64 3200+ 2GHZ
Hard Drive: 60 Gb 4200rpm vs Hp has 80GB 5400rpm
Memory: 512MB with max upgrade 1GB vs hp 1GB(2X512MB)max upgrade 2 GB
Operating system: XP home vs HP XP Pro
Graphics:Intel Extreme Graphics 2 shared 64mb meomory vs HP has NVIDIA GeForce 4 440 Go+1394 with 64 dedicated mb memory
    ports Hp has more

Compaq is only $800 and the HP over $1700 but it still seems Hp is better looking at this.

I am setting here looking at the weekend advertising section that comes in our "Sunday" paper. I do not know if they have the same sale price on the web site. I would call or visit the nearest Office Depot and ask about the "Build-your-own" or as Hp refers to it as the "Configure-to-order" (CTO) systems.

P.S. They are made in the same Chinese factory with the same components, reliability should be the same.
