    Hi All,

Please let me know which resolution for a 15.4" display laptop will be right for watching TV in the best quality ?

    Should it be WSXGA+(1680 x 1050 ) or less ?

Im going to buy a new 15.4 " laptop and dont want to regret the decision of buying the laptop with the wrong resolution later .

    Thanks.

Are you able to get a HD signal in your area with a TV tuner? If so, get 1440x900 resolution (HD over TV tuners doesn't match the HD quality you'll get over Cable unfortunately). If you can only get standard definition TV get a screen with a 1280x800 resolution.

If you are watching standard TV (low-def) then you want the lowest resolution possible so that the tuner does not have to scale more to fit the whole screen. The lowest native resolution for a 15.4 is 1280*800 (WXGA). However, if you are watching high definition programming, regular HDTV is 1280*720 (which a WXGA is perfect for) and if you watch Full HDTV (1920*1080) you would want a 1920*1200 display (believe it or not Alienware has a 15.4" 1920*1200 display, which means the text in Windows is like microscopic) Hope this helps.

EDIT: like MICHAELSD01 stated, Over the Air HDTV goes up to only 720p (1280*720).

    Which one is better ?

Sorry if this sounds silly but Im totally ignorant .

As regards the tv signals at my location they are from a personal dish antenna to the satellite receiver and then to the laptop via the tv tuner(Pinnacle PCTV USB 2.0 external box type tv tuner) .

So far as signal is concerned Im not sure whether it is digital or not but the satellite tv company's commercial claims picture to be of dvd quality .

At present Im watching tv via tv tuner on a standard 14 inch display of Dell latitude C610 laptop whose maximum resolution is infortunately only 1024 x 768 :(

Now Im going to buy a new laptop hence asked for the forum users' advise .

Further the Dell XPS 1530 Im thinking of buying has the option of 3 resolutions :

    If you get:

    720p, go for WXGA (1280x800)
    1080p, go for WUXGA (1920x1200)
