I've found that HP Omen's have a pretty darn good price for a 1070 setup, which of these would be ideal?
Both Machines:
Old model Omen ($1650):
- Intel® Core™ i7-7700HQ (2.8 GHz, up to 3.8 GHz, 6 MB cache, 4 cores) + NVIDIA® GeForce® GTX 1070 (8 GB GDDR5 dedicated)
- 16 GB DDR4-2400 SDRAM (2 x 8 GB)
New model Omen($1600):
- 17.3" diagonal 4K UHD IPS UWVA anti-glare WLED-backlit (3840 x 2160)
- 512GB PCIe® NVMe™ M.2 SSD
- 17.3" diagonal FHD 120 Hz IPS anti-glare WLED-backlit (1920 x 1080)
- 1 TB 7200 rpm SATA; 128 GB PCIe® NVMe™ M.2 SSD
Now I'm currently going to go with a P650 from HID but if I can save $500 and get nearly the same level of everything, I might swap to one of these. What are everyone's thoughts on the screens and cooling in these especially?
Thanks!

Was literally in your same spot. Was looking at some Clevo/Sager laptops because I am very cheap, but wanted to check my student discount effectiveness in my country (Australia). I bought the Omen 17 an0xx (the mid-2017 model refresh). This has a 7700HQ and GTX 1070 (I was after a 1060 minimum so this was a nice touch).
All in all, I got this for ~$2500AUD (down from about $3300) and have been pretty happy with my purchase.
Major factors for the decision:
- High refresh rate on the screen (120Hz is buttery smooth)
- Build quality. Yes it's plastic, but it's not a very cheap feeling plastic. And the keyboard deck is rock solid with minimal flex.
- GTX 1070 for GTX 1060 price. I'm a sucker for 'value'
- Large open cooling vents on the base. These make a bigger difference in temperature than I had thought. Not the coolest laptop ever, but not the hottest. Good balance between weight and cooling.
Note: I have previously owned a Clevo P650SG (GTX 980M) and Asus G752VY (also GTX 980M).
Compared to the G752VY, this laptop is a bit trickier to game on the lap. It's steady, but it runs a little warmer since different cooling solution. The GTX 1070 in this laptop never goes above 70 degrees C for me in PUBG and the CPU sits, relatively comfy at 80 degrees C.
The fan noise is not the quietest. My G752VY had god-level acoustics/thermals, but I wanted something a little different this time around.
Overall, I'd give the Omen 17 a 7.5/10 if you were to pay RRP like a goose. With the discounts offered to me and the relative competition in the Australian market, I struggle to find reasons why this shouldn't be a 9/10.
It loses the 1/10 because I'm also impossible to please.
I'd like to see openings on the upper side of the case to assist with cooling more (vents just above the keyboard as in MSI designs), but otherwise, hard to fault.Yauchy likes this. -
my vote would be for the new model .better cooling ,the lower rez screen with the 1070 8g and 1080 screen at 120 hz you will be playing games on high for a good time to come .I wish they had this deal when I got mine .I am very happy with the rx580 8g it truly has come to shock me how well it does in games but given the 1070 and 120hz 1080 screen I would have jumped on that one . just my 2 cents
Which to buy - New model Omen or Old model Omen (on sale)?
