Hello everyone! I will buy a DV1000 next month when I can finally accumulate enough money for the purchase. But I would like to know which wireless card is better, Intel's or Broadcom's?
I know you need Intel's wireless card for the "Centrino" sticker but I personally like the Pentium M sticker more. But if Intel offers the superior wireless card, then I'll go with that. Speaking of that, I've heard lots of people say they like the look of the Centrino sticker, but does anyone else like the look of the Pentium M sticker?
What do any DV1000 or V2000 owners have to say about this? I'm thinking maybe there'd be better compatibility with Intel's Pentium M and Intel's wireless card, but I could be wrong. So which card do you think is better? [?]

Well its not just the sticker, you need it to complete the Centrino trio of Pentium M, Centrino Chipset, and Intel Wireless card. This will give you the ultimate of all that stuff Centrino is advertised to do...Best Battery life, better hotspot works, easier networking, etc.

Spring the extra $25 or so and get the Bluetooth-enabled one. Even if you don't need Bluetooth.
I bought a DV1000 w/ the Bluetooth wireless card, and a friend just bought an entry-level Compaq with the standard wireless card that came with his (not sure which it is, but I imagine the same one that comes standard w/ the DV1000).
I just helped him move to San Diego and get settled in his new apt. When we got there, just for grins, we both fired up our new machines to see if we could mooch off a neighbor's wireless network. (his cable wasn't in yet).
My machine w/ the Bluetooth-enabled card picked up the faint signal of some neighbor's wireless internet. (enough to use it, thank you neighbor). His machine, with the basic card, couldn't grab the signal. I don't think the Bluetooth had anything to do with it, but I suspect it means my card is more sensitive and will work on faint signals better than the basic one. It's only $25 more, get the Bluetooth one (does 54g too). -
Thanks for the replies everyone! So I should go for Broadcom then. I like the Pentium M sticker better anyways.
I've heard that also wireless cards made by other companies like Atheros and Broadcom actually give you slightly better battery life than ones made by Intel because they are more efficient or something like that. Can someone confirm this? -
What's the model number of the Broadcom WiFi/Bluetooth card? Where can I purchase?
Thanks. -
Broadcom is a OEM supplier.
Its WLAN card can be configured with computers you order(HP/DELL/ACER,etc)
It is also present in network cards like LiNKSYS
http://www.54g.org/
So basicaly you order your computer with it or buy wlan cards like linksys
Check the above link for various products.

i found first generation centrino wireless to be quite iffy. Many had problems with it. Broadcom and Atheros are the two majoy players now, most companies use one of the two. I've found Broadcom to have slightly more range while Atheros to be slightly faster. However there are so many revisions coming out and each have their own 108MBps standard. Also each manufacturers firmware and implementation is slightly different too. Broadcom seems to be coming out on top right now, with more wins from big manufacturers like laptop and PDAs. It will also help when you pair a router with the same chip so you can use the 108 speeds (or true 54MBps as actual performance shows)

I have one bit of advice. Check the website regarding Broadcom and their drivers. Also check something like www.anandtech.com and www.notebookforums.com for their discussion forums to see what experience others are having. This is based on the preference for people here to recommend Broadcomm. I have read in other sites that Intel has more energy efficient technology (longer battery life). As for Bluetooth, I am only aware of mice, cell phones and GPS compatibility. If it won't kill you to spend the $25 go ahead but it is a nice amount of money for say a night at the movies with popcorn and a coke or something <or> happy hour at your local college bar. LOL!

Hi titan
but your Linksys router has Broadcom 54g technology []
25$ is peanuts when you know you need bluetooth compatibility later on for your PDA and you can't buy a card for it []
