No wonder you can't get a repair back in a reasonable amount of time;

class action suits against HP for defective ZD7000s

They must be swamped with these things!!
And it seems so many of these problems are heat related issues which stem from poor motherboard design/manufacture; it just makes me wonder who is supplying the motherboards? The same Chinese folks that paint Mattel's toys, make pet food and manufacture heparin?![]()
I remember reading a few years back, when I was first researching out a laptop and bought my ZD, there are only something like 4 OEM laptop manufacturers in the world (all in China, I believe); are other large companies (Dell, Gateway, Sony) having the same large scale failures in their product lines?
Seems like it's time for HP to switch vendors, or at the very least drop one vendor.

Yeah well your kettle, TV, fridge, mp3 player, cell phone, calculator, camera........theyare all probably made in china by the way...
Problems with notebooks depends on models, not brands, customer service depends on brands, intel will soon make their CPUs in china too, so are your hard drives, ram...errrrr you get the idea. There are many excellent HP notebooks, as with Dell. As you might know...the all super special thinkpads are made in China too...
So really dont worry about it, read some reviews, do some research, and get some user opinions and you will be fine! :wink: -
I'm just wondering if the motherboards are coming from the same sub-contractor; if so, I would switch companies if I were HP.
Frankly, I was perfectly happy with my ZD for the last 3 years; it was a very nice laptop and provided me with hours of entertainment.
I guess my point is that a lot of industries, including the tech industry, need to get a better grip on quality control and customer service. HP can't expect it's customers to go without their PCs for 4,6,10 weeks at a time. With any product, there are lemons, it's a fact of life; but when you see entire product lines with similar problems, it means someone is cutting corners somewhere.
The reason I mention China is that it has been so prominently in the news for major product issues; I think they have taken a bigger bite than they are capable of chewing. China and India have become low cost manufacturing centers, taking work from OTHER low cost manufacturing countries (like Mexico); you can only get so much quality work from folks when you are paying the equivalent of $.50 a day in wages. As a result, the cost of some products, especially tech products, have dropped considerably; the DV9700T with which HP will replace my 3 year old ZD, and is arguably a much superior unit even in the base configuration, costs $949 on HPshopping.com vs. the $1999 I paid for the ZD in December 2004. It's not magic, and HP doesn't love us so much they are reducing their profit margin; they are using vendors that can supply the components at ridiculously low costs, and it shows. -
Wait a minute...I swear i just wrote a long post...
damit!
Anyways...yeah I know what you mean, I have a HP/compaq made by Mitac that I am typing on right now, GPU burnt out after 1 year, HP replaced it quickly, I was happy with it.
But what I ''did'' post was...considering the sheer amount of products China produces every year, there are bound to be more defective products in comparison to other countries. It is just unfortunate that sometimes things get to the news and get blown out of proportion. -
with the latest recall, my hunch is that it is more a design problem than of a manufacturing problem. most of these computer brands share subcontractors, quality of manufacture is similar. what sets them apart is development, design, choice of raw material/supplier. all principally influenced by the brand owner.

Should be helpful for alot of people.
Who manufactures HP Pavilions?!
