    Hi all,

I recently decided to get myself a CardBus eSATA card to get onto a new level of speeds with transferring data onto my external HDD's.

Has anybody used the CardBus on this notebook?
I had a search and it used the Ricoh R5C847 module which I found some info on... which makes me worried that this so called upgrade will be really a DOWNGRADE

    Have a look on that:
http://2xod.com/articles/eSATA Performance of Various Cardbus Controllers/index old 4-14-08.html

The T61 uses the same controller so I am a bit concerned that my HP will also suffer same problem

    Thanks for any input!

Are using the latest drivers? Not that I think it would make much difference.

The only other option I can think of is to replace the Cardbus with another brand, like the TI used in the nx6325, nw8440, nc8430, etc. The only problem is that I don't think it will fit in your laptop, given that yours have a card reader under the smart card slot. The 8710w looks identical to the older models though.

I didn't buy my CardBus card yet.
And read this guy's website. It's not the drivers, it looks like the chip's performance is the limit... and this is what I want to find out anyway.

I had a look in the service manual, it's not removable in your laptop, unlike many other models.

Sorry Mats, misread your post :)
Seems like T61 after the update is performing much better ~40-50mb/s so I'll might give it a go..
