There shouldn't been a password set for hte BIOS unless you did it. Is this your machine or someone else's?

Could you specify your problem more clearly? I can't make out anything you're saying. It's reasonable to feel the way you do, but it's making your message incomprehensible.

you need to install it on the laptop your using it on, you cant load it on one pc and then move the hd into another and expect xp to work.

Yea you can't do that, its not a toster... You must install the OS (that xp thingy ;) ) on your laptop. It has to set it self up with the motherboard for that laptop.
If you have a password set in the bios and dont know what it is. Then you must reset the bios via the motherboard. There is usually a jumper that you have to short in order to do this. I don't kno w how to do this on your laptop, so you better call the HPtech support. Ask for the guy with an accent. :p

why cant you boot off the cd and install the os that way? why do you even need to get into the bios, it should be set by default to boot from cd. is there a bios password thats preventing you from booting? if thats the case then you will need to find the reset jumper, removing the battery doesnt usually work.

Please feel free to disregard our ideas towards a solution to your problem. By reading your title, it tells me to respond if I have experience with HP laptops. I have a HP laptop, there forth I have "experience" with them, please rephrase your title. Maybe you could put "ATTN: HP Tech Support" in the title, that way an HP tech agent will contact you with a professional solution. I think its part of their extended warranty.

If you are going to get nit-picky about who attempts to help you, maybe you should try else where...

The bios PW will hit before he even gets the option to boot from any secondary storage. Also Alpha is right in his expert advice, mearly taking out the battery won't do anything. You must short the jumper to reset, seeing how the pw is stored inside the bios chip...

This concludes my help on this issue, write things down...

    QUOTE
    1.2 Resetting the Notebook
If the notebook you are servicing has an unknown password,
follow these steps to clear the password. These steps also
    clear CMOS:
    1. Prepare the notebook for disassembly (refer to Section 5.3,
“Preparing the Notebook for Disassembly,” for more
    information).
    2. Remove the real time clock (RTC) battery (refer to
Section 5.14, “RTC Battery,” for more information).
    3. Wait approximately 5 minutes.
    4. Replace the RTC battery and reassemble the notebook.
    5. Connect AC power to the notebook. Do not reinsert any
    battery packs at this time.
    6. Turn on the notebook.
All passwords and all CMOS settings have been cleared.

    Emil,

    1. I know you're a bit frustrated that you can't get it working, but please don't take it out on other users that are trying to help.

    2. You can't install XP from one computer and move the HDD to another computer and expect it to work. There's something called a HAL (Hardware Abstraction Layer) that pretty much indicates what the current hardware config is. Unless the system you're moving it to has the exact same hardware internally (motherboard, HDD controller, etc...), it's not going to work. You may have done this with other brand of computers, but I doubt it was with XP (95, 98, ME & NT) should be OK, W2K I'm not 100% sure of, XP, defiinitely not. There are ways to import the only HAL back into the system, but I'm not going into that.

    3. Since this is a 2nd hand unit, you must have bought it from someone. Just contact that person to get the password.

    4. If they can't provide the password, you're gonna have to question if this was this unit actaully theirs. If it was, they you'll have to reset the BIOS as indicated by others.

    5. Since you're not capable of getting into the BIOS, I don't see how this is preventing you from booting from CD. If the HDD has no OS, the system will automatically search for a bootable device. If the OS CD is bootable, then it should automatically boot from the CD and start the install.

    6. If this password is being prompted when you turn the system on and you can't continue booting without entering a password, then it's not a BIOS password, it's a Power ON password. This prevents non-owners of the notebook to power on and access the unit.

    7. Your only options at this point is to get the password from the person you bought it from, reset the BIOS password as previously indicated by others or finally, send the unit to HP and have it reset by them.

I know you may not want to send the unit to HP since it's out of warranty, but at this point, you have no other options if everything above has already failed.

Actually, you're only other option would be to buy a new notebook.

Oh yeah, I have read your title, I do have an HP notebook and I have repaired HP notebooks in the past. ;)
