Not just HP but most notebook manufactuers use really poor LCD's with poor viewing angles, poor blacks and basically a washed out display as seen on most HP DV series laptop both 14.1" and 15.4" displays, seems you only get a decent display i.e one with an LED backlight if your paying up to £1000 and above...
I mean no wonder they are so cheap £500 for a decent spec lappy with a cruddy screen, I mean why have a blu ray drive in the machine as the display is so poor it's hard to tell the difference between SD and HD material let alone see it unless the lights are off, and you spend 5 minutes trying to tilt the screen to get a viewable picture..
Samsung Q210 is an example of a good spec laptop, cheap price but poor display...
One of the main things people underestimate and don't think about when buying a laptop is the display, which is the most important thing as that's what your will be working from, walk into pretty much any store selling computer or laptops and the last thing the slas person will tell you when selling a laptop is about the display, in fact they won't mention it, all they will say is HD display and that's it, HD means nothing just a term which a bunch of numbers related to it, what good is a HD display if it has poor viewing angles, poor blacks and washed out image, an example of this is the new Macbook, they claim LED but i've seen it in person does not look like LED backlight, just another washed out display...,
So when you go and buy a laptop compare them all, look at the displays, tilt them up and down and see if you are able to work from it, then head over to the Sony TZ and Z series laptops, compare the displays to them, you probably won't find a better looking display than them, but use them as an example...
Bottom line is don't pay attention to anyone, I find it best to bring in a USB stick on with some decent pictures on and HD videos, i.e from www.wmvhd.com and just test them out on various laptops, see which was has the best displayfor your budget, some times it's best to spend the extra £100 or 200 one a laptop that has a more pleasing display....
Anyway can't wait to see the HP mininote 1000 in person, to see how it's LED backlit display looks as all the netbooks have bad displays...

I'm happy with the screen on my DV7. I haven't had any viewing angle problems.
-
The dv9700, dv6700, etc. All have very nice screens...
Its the new line (dv7, dv5, etc) that arent as nice.
But The Inspiron 1520 has a horrible dark screen. One of the worst. -
ur absolutely right, but then i find nothing wrong with lcd makers pushing for
led displays.
computers with led screens are relatively cheap in the States. u can get one within $600-800 range.
according to some article found on google, led screen is 70% more expensive than ccfl one. -
agreed... my DV7 out of the box looked washed out... I had to adjust it in order to make it look remotely usable...
unfortunately, that seems to be the trend at the moment... people want cheaper machines... and manufacturers are using mediocre panels on low-mid end notebooks...
with use of LED-backlight being more common now... hope the quality of panels are better... -
You seem to have a very high standard when it comes to LCD screens.
HP's have glossy screen which doesnt have great viewing angles and have hi-glare.
Look for a notebook with an IPS screen. -
You just read my mind. I have been thinking about this all day and just made a post 10 mins ago in another forum about HP's new HDX18t laptop.
at 18.4" they tell you it's ultrabright blah blah but there is no spec on it.
Is it 300nits? 400nits? They don't tell you!!
I'm on my HP tabletPC right now and I wish it were MUCH brighter...
I just checked out the latest macbook and it looks CLEAN but not bright.
If that is LED, I'm not entirely impressed... -
i've had my dv7 non infinity screen 1440x900 for a couple weeks and even at full brightness, i'm wondering if my vision is going dim.
tweaked the colors a little - can't go any brighter or it will really wash out.
definitely not as nice a screen as my old acer 5672, but the tradeoff is it's a much better computer overall than the acer. -
I dont know why they decresed their excellent screen quality down to the new line... It makes no sense, usually it should get better...
-
Do some gamma calibrations and you'll be at least 50% happier.
-
My Vaio TZ has an LED Panel, knocks the socks off any other display, has GMA 950 and didn't even mess with one setting was perfect out of the box... -

My DV5T screen looks great to me, without any adjustments. Its especially nice when watching a movie in the dark ( I did notice that if I have background light, like a window, it made it hard to see - but that is expected from this kind of high gloss screen)
-
I found out that the macbookpro uses a different LED screen!!
If you get the macbook, it's lower quality and it's a different vendor or something like that.
Over at the mac forums they are complaining that the MB and MBP are vastly different in screen quality. -

I have never had a problem with a moniter other then a dead pixel and weird bright spots. I dont even understand half of the problems like bleeding and such. I gusse they just all come right for me or somthing.
