I've just had a little idea spring to mind. I hope it hasn't been done before and that no one will get mad at me doing this.

    Here's the idea.

Every laptop manufacturer/brand has something unique about it. Each have their advantages and disadvantages, and their fanbase. Something must draw the fans to this brand or that, and I'd like to know what.

So I'm gonna post a thread like this in the forums dedicated to each of the major manufacturers (i.e. the ones who have the most active forums).

I welcome everyone (especially the fans of the particular brand) to post what is it that they like about these laptops. Any reasons are welcome - from features and performance to price and family traditions.

Of course, you can also post things that you don't like.

So, why do you like HP/Compaq?

They had one of the very few AMD Athlon 64 notebooks with dedicated memory video at the time I bought my zv5000z, maybe the only one that offered 1680x1050 res widescreens. It's been very easy to upgrade (with the exception of the miniPCI WiFi card courtesy of their rigged BIOS), even the CPU is easy to get to, though they "fixed" that latter feature on the zv6000. It even works well for 64-bit Fedora Core 4 Linux.

I'm not particularly loyal to HP though. Whoever comes out with a nice new AMD machine using nVidia's new chipset, whenever it's ready, and decent nVidia dedicated memory GPU, is probably going to get my business. (I want nVidia for Linux compatibility, even if I spend most of my time in Windows.) If it's HP, cool. HP has been ignoring the high end of the market lately though.

I like HP/Compaq because of their price, the looks of their computers and their reliability. What I don't like about them is them not including dedicated GPU's in notebooks that really need them and them still using ML Turions.

-One of the few to offer the Turion 64.

    -reasonably equipped for the
    average consumer.

    -High quality speakers and sound
    card for a laptop.

    and

    -they dumped Fiorina.

They sell their stuff really cheap, and at least in the past, it was all assembled in the states, something that's becoming rarer and rarer (Japan is fine with me too).

Apart from the HD failure I had (2/2 Toshiba drives have failed on me), the notebook has been reliable, rugged and resilient.

I know that Fujitsu laptops are made in Japan, I think just about everything else now is made in China.

Great build quality for the money you pay and they actually sell a variety of AMD products, not just one or two like most other companies.

They were one of the first to offer A64 based laptops & now that they have included more AMD based laptops, I am more likely to consider them if I am to buy a laptop in the future. The other factor, the price/quality was also very favorable.

So many differences here...you have the HP home line, the HP buisness line, and the Compaq home line....

    HP Pavilion notebooks:

Pros include the nice level of configurability...nearly as good as Dell, which is pretty much the cream of the crop. However, Pavilions are a little up there in price...not a LOT, but a little. The new DV series machines are nice though.

    HP Buisness notebook line:

Now, how is is that the home line can be so customizable, but the buisness line so UN-customizable? You may as well look at the pre-configured models; the "customizer" pretty much decreases the available options based on what you select and what pre-configured models it's available with. They're also quite expensive for what you get, though several models can be had with a Track-point, which is a rarity these days (ThinkPads, some Dell Latitudes, some HP buisness books, and select Fujitsus...oh and that ONE Toshiba Libretto, but it's in the wrong spot).

    Compaq Presario notebooks:

Sweet spot! You get a choice between Sempron mobile, Turion-64 mobile, or Pentium-M on most models. They're as configurable as the HP home line, but cheaper. The bad? Hmmm....no Trackpoint, I guess. And they don't offer a 17 inch widescreen, but HP has one.

HPs aren't terribly expensive (on the medium side), and their build quality is usually great depending on which model you get. Speakers of HP laptops have always been known for high quality sound and rich bass.

Compaqs used to be a good brand. However, since after their acquisition, their products have been nothing but "stripped down" versions of HP products. Well, at least in Canada it is.
